Getting from the Riverboat

Compiègne is a river-cruise and hotel-barge stop on the Oise. Passengers normally step ashore at a riverside mooring rather than tendering. Confirm the exact berth and pedestrian exit with the crew: the town’s marina and other leisure-boat boarding points should not be assumed to be your cruise berth.

From a central riverside mooring, the old town is practical on foot. Use Place de l’Hôtel de Ville as your first sightseeing point; the château is a short walk farther through the center. Ask the crew for directions and a walking-time estimate from your actual gangway.

Allow 2–3 hours for the royal and imperial apartments followed by a short park walk. The château is within the town, so this combines easily with the historic center without a vehicle transfer.

The château normally closes on Tuesdays. Its museum sections have different opening arrangements, so check which collections are accessible rather than expecting every gallery to be open. Allow time for entrance security.

The park has separate entrances and seasonal closing times. Use the designated gates, including the entrance on Rue du Petit Château, rather than assuming you can pass directly through the palace. A 45–90-minute stroll is a useful alternative if you prefer gardens to interiors.

Clairière de l’Armistice

The Armistice Clearing is a separate forest destination, not part of the town-center walking route. Visit the memorial clearing and museum, which includes a railway carriage presented in the setting of the 1918 armistice negotiations.

Obtain a journey-time estimate from your driver for the actual berth and arrange the return before leaving town. The museum normally closes on Tuesdays.

Walking there and back would consume too much of a typical call. Cycling is an option for confident riders with sufficient time, but requires a confirmed bicycle rental and a planned route.

4. Saint-Jacques Church: See the church exterior and visit inside if open.
5. Place du Général de Gaulle: Continue to the château’s main façade. A palace visit is an optional addition.
6. Saint-Pierre-des-Minimes: Return via Rue des Minimes, passing the former church now used as an exhibition space.
7. Rue des Pâtissiers: Follow this street back toward the town hall square.

Return to the boat using the route confirmed by the crew. If adding the château park, allow extra time to reach its separate entrance and retrace your way into town.
