Beppu (Japan Oita)

Beppu is one of Japan’s best-known hot-spring destinations. Cruise ships normally dock at Beppu International Tourist Port, but the principal attractions are spread between the city center, Kannawa hot-spring district and nearby mountains. Downtown is walkable once reached; visiting the famous “hells” requires a bus, taxi or organized tour.

Getting from the Cruise Port

The international cruise berths are north of central Beppu. JR Beppu Station and the downtown hot-spring district are approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) away, normally around 10–15 minutes by road.

• Shuttle: Cruise lines frequently arrange transfers to central Beppu or the station, but this is specific to each call and should be confirmed onboard.
• Taxi: The most convenient option for downtown, Kannawa or a small group visiting several attractions.
• Local bus: Useful for reaching Beppu Station, Kannawa and the hells, although routes and departure times should be checked on arrival.
• Walking: Walking downtown from the berth is possible but takes roughly 40–50 minutes each way and uses valuable sightseeing time.

JR Beppu Station is the practical transport hub for local buses and taxis. Some services leave from the east side and others from the west side, so check the stop before boarding.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Beppu Hells and Kannawa

Allow 3–4 hours, excluding port transfers. This is the most distinctive choice for a first visit. Five of the seven geothermal pools are within the Kannawa area; the remaining two are in Shibaseki and require another bus or taxi ride.

Buses from JR Beppu Station generally take around 20 minutes to reach Kannawa or Umi Jigoku. Visiting all seven hells takes approximately 2–3 hours once there. Passengers with limited time can see the clustered Kannawa sites instead of trying to complete the entire circuit.

The pools are for viewing rather than bathing. Kannawa also offers steamy lanes, footbaths and food cooked with natural hot-spring steam. Independent visits are practical, but a taxi or organized tour simplifies the transfer between the two groups of hells.

Downtown Beppu and a Traditional Onsen

Allow 2–3 hours. From Beppu Station, explore the compact shopping streets, local bathhouses and waterfront. Takegawara Onsen, approximately a 10-minute walk from the station, is one of the city’s most recognizable traditional bathhouses.

This is the easiest independent option, especially if the ship provides a central shuttle. Anyone planning to bathe should allow time for changing and follow the facility’s rules concerning washing, towels and tattoos. Bathing areas are normally gender-separated and entered without swimwear.

Beppu Ropeway and Mount Tsurumi

Allow 3–4 hours. The ropeway’s lower station is approximately 20 minutes by bus from JR Beppu Station, followed by a roughly 10-minute aerial ride. The summit area offers walking paths and wide views in clear weather.

This option is independent with planning, but weather can affect visibility and operation. Check the latest service status and return-bus times before leaving the city. A taxi provides more flexibility during a shorter call.

Umitamago Aquarium

Allow 2.5–3.5 hours including transport. The aquarium stands on the coast between Beppu and Oita. A direct bus from central Beppu normally takes around 15 minutes. It is a practical family option and can be combined with the adjacent Takasakiyama monkey park when the port call is long enough.

Yufuin

Allow at least 5–6 hours. Yufuin is a mountain resort west of Beppu, reached by road or limited public transport. Travel arrangements and return timing require care, so an organized excursion or prearranged transport is preferable for cruise passengers. Do not combine Yufuin with a full visit to all seven hells unless the ship has an unusually long stay.

Self-Guided Downtown Walk

Route: JR Beppu Station → station forecourt hot-spring features → Ekimae-dori → Yayoi shopping arcade → Takegawara Onsen → Kitahama waterfront → Beppu Station.

• Distance: Approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi).
• Pure walking time: About 35–45 minutes.
• Recommended total time: 1.5–2.5 hours, longer if bathing or stopping for lunch.
• Difficulty: Easy; predominantly level city streets.

1. Begin outside JR Beppu Station and note the location and departure time of any ship shuttle.
2. Walk east along Ekimae-dori toward the sea.
3. Detour through the covered shopping arcades for small shops and local food.
4. Continue to Takegawara Onsen to view its traditional exterior or use the baths if time permits.
5. Walk north toward Kitahama and the waterfront.
6. Return inland to Beppu Station for the shuttle, bus or taxi back to the ship.

The route begins at the station rather than the cruise berth because the walk from the port adds approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) in each direction.

Practical Tips

• Check the ship’s berth and shuttle arrangements before going ashore; facilities used by different calls can vary.
• Use a taxi when sharing costs with several passengers or when the call is too short to accommodate local-bus waiting time.
• Carry the port or ship name in Japanese for the return taxi journey.
• Wear shoes with good grip around geothermal areas, where paths may be wet and uneven.
• Do not enter or touch the viewing pools at the hells; water and steam can be dangerously hot.
• For independent trips to Kannawa, Mount Tsurumi or Yufuin, check the return schedule before starting.
• Allow at least 60–90 minutes between returning to central Beppu and the ship’s all-aboard time, with a larger margin for distant excursions.
