Castellammare di Stabia is a port city part of the Naples Metropolis, with population around 70,000. The port (locode ITCAS) is approx 30 km (19 mi) to the southeast of Naples. The Naples Metropolis (2015-established in Italy's Campania region) groups a total of 92 municipalities.
As cruise port, Castellammare is visited only by luxury ships and superyachts as all large liners dock at Port Napoli. In Castellammare, cruise vessels either dock at Stabia Main Port's pier (if the LOA length allows it) or anchor off the port and transport their passengers via tender boats to Marina di Stabia.
Regularly scheduled ferries link Castellammare with Sorrento (40-min travel time), Amalfi (2,5-hours), Positano (2-hours), Capri Island (1-hour). Crossings to Capri are provided by the companies SNAV (Societa Navigazione Alta Velocita/subsidiary of MSC Group) and NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo/owned by the families Aponte and Savarese). The other ferry connections (7 weekly crossings) are by NLG ships only.
The port houses Regio Cantiere di Castellammare di Stabia (Royal Dockyard of Castellammare di Stabia) which is one of the shipyards owned by Fincantieri - currently ranked among the world's largest shipbuilding companies. Fincantieri's other merchant shipbuilding facilities are Marghera (Venice), Sestri Ponente (Genova), Ancona, Monfalcone (near Trieste) and Palermo Sicily, plus the naval shipyards Riva Trigoso (Genova) and Muggiano (La Spezia).
The settlement was established around a 9th-century castle (Stabia), in the mid-19th-century (1863) was renamed Castellamare, and in 1912 - Castellammare di Stabia. Popular tourist attractions and landmarks include Castellammare Cathedral (19th-century/Concattedral di Maria Santissima Assunta e San Catello), Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (17th-century church), Chiesa di Santa Caterina (18th-century church), Chiesa del Gesu (17th-century church), Chiesa del Purgatorio (19th-century church), Roman villas (perfectly preserved due to Mount Vesuvius' eruption), thermal baths (using 28 thermal waters of different types and therapeutic properties).
At a Glance
Independent with some planning or transport. Castellammare di Stabia has a walkable waterfront and town center, but the Roman villas and most major regional attractions require a taxi, train or organized excursion. The port is particularly useful as a gateway to Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.
Smaller cruise ships may berth at the main commercial port, while others can anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore. The arrival point may be the main port or Marina di Stabia, so confirm the ship's arrangements before planning a walking route.
Getting from the Cruise Port
- Main port: The waterfront, historic center and local restaurants are within walking distance. The immediate port area is industrial in places, but passengers can continue toward the seafront promenade and central streets.
- Marina di Stabia: This modern marina is outside the most convenient sightseeing area. Use any cruise transfer provided or take a taxi rather than attempting the long walk along busy roads.
- Trains: Local EAV/Circumvesuviana services connect the area with Pompeii, Naples and Sorrento. Castellammare di Stabia and Via Nocera are separate stations, so check which station and service suit the journey.
- Taxis: Useful for the Roman villas, Pompeii and station transfers. Agree on the destination and fare before departure.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Explore the Waterfront and Old Town
This is the easiest independent option for a short call. Walk along the Villa Comunale promenade, see the ornate Cassa Armonica bandstand, browse the central streets and continue toward the older waterfront around Acqua della Madonna. Allow about 2–3 hours, including a café or lunch stop.
Visit the Roman Villas of Stabiae
Villa Arianna and Villa San Marco preserve Roman rooms, courtyards and frescoes on the Varano hillside. They are much quieter than Pompeii but are not conveniently reached on foot from the port. A taxi is the practical choice, with about 2–3 hours for transport and a visit. Confirm current access and opening arrangements before leaving the ship.
Pompeii Archaeological Park
Pompeii is the strongest half-day excursion from this port. Allow roughly 4–5 hours for transfers, entry and at least two hours inside the extensive site. A taxi or organized excursion is simplest; independent travelers can use the local rail network after confirming the correct station and return schedule. The archaeological streets are uneven, exposed and tiring in hot weather.
Sorrento
Sorrento is practical by train or prearranged road transfer. Spend time around Piazza Tasso, the lanes of the historic center, Villa Comunale and the viewpoints above Marina Grande. Allow approximately 4–5 hours overall. Road traffic can be slow, particularly during summer, so rail is often more predictable when services fit the ship's call.
Amalfi Coast Scenic Excursion
Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are possible on a long port call, but winding roads and unpredictable traffic make independent touring risky. A ship-sponsored or carefully timed organized excursion is recommended. Trying to combine several towns with Pompeii or Sorrento usually produces more driving than sightseeing.
Self-Guided Waterfront Walk
Suitable only when passengers arrive at the main port.
- Leave the main port and follow the waterfront toward the town center.
- Walk through the Villa Comunale seafront gardens.
- Pause at the Cassa Armonica bandstand.
- Continue through the central shopping streets toward the Co-Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta and San Catello.
- Explore the lanes around the older center and Piazza Orologio.
- Continue to the Acqua della Madonna waterfront if time allows, then return along the same general route.
The complete outing is approximately 4–5 km (2.5–3.1 mi), with about 60–75 minutes of pure walking and 2–3 hours including stops. Most of the route is easy, though the older streets can be uneven and mildly sloping. Do not use this route from Marina di Stabia without first arranging transport into town.
Beaches and Boat Trips
Pozzano has beach clubs and small coastal bathing areas west of town, but it requires a taxi and is better suited to a relaxed call than a full sightseeing day. Seasonal ferries and excursion boats may connect Castellammare with Capri or coastal destinations, but schedules vary and services may not align safely with cruise times. Use them only when a substantial return margin is available.
Practical Tips
- Confirm the exact berth or tender landing point before making independent plans.
- Check live train and ferry schedules on the day; seasonal services and disruptions are possible.
- The Monte Faito cable car should not be included in plans unless its official reopening and operating status have been confirmed following the 2025 accident.
- Wear supportive shoes for Pompeii and the Roman villas; surfaces can be rough and shade is limited.
- Allow extra return time for tenders, coastal traffic and public-transport delays.
