Capri is an island situated in Tyrrhenian Sea off Sorrentine Peninsula. It lies on the south side of Gulf of Naples in Campania region, Italy. The main town Capri, which has been a resort since the time of Roman Republic, shares the name. The town of Capri is island's main population centre. In 2002 Capri Island had a population of 12,200 people on a total area of 10.4 km2 (4.0 ml2).
The ferry takes 80 minutes from Naples; the hydrofoil takes 40 minutes; and from Sorrento, the ferry takes 40 minutes; the hydrofoil about 20. Boats call at Marina Grande, from where the funicular goes up to the town of Capri. From Anacapri, a chair lift takes visitors to Monte Solaro, the highest point on Capri Island (589 m /1,932 ft).
Some of the most important features of the island include Marina Piccola (little harbour), Belvedere of Tragara (panoramic promenade), the limestone crags named sea stacks which project above the sea (Faraglioni), town of Anacapri, Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), and the ruins of Imperial Roman villas.
Capri is part of Campania region, Province of Naples. The island has 2 harbours, Marina Grande (the main port) and Marina Piccola. The separate Anacapri commune is located to the west, high on the hills.
