Djupivogur is a port town located on a peninsula in Austurland, eastern Iceland. It is on Berufjordur Fjord and close to Papey Island. This small town has population under 500.

The municipality of Djupivogur was formed as a result of the merger of rural communities Buland, Geithellur and Berunes on October 1, 1992. Currently, the coastline consists of 3 fjords: Berufjordur, Hamarsfjordur, and Alftafjordur. The town of Djupivogur is located on a peninsula between Berufjordur and Hamarsfjordur.

Approx 900 m (2950 ft) west of Djupivogur is a work of art named "Eggin í Gledivík" ("The Eggs of Merry Bay") by Sigurdur Gudmundsson. It was installed in the summer of 2009 and is actually a replica of the eggs of 34 nesting birds in the region.

Approx 5 km (3 mi) west of Djupivogur lies Teigarhorn, which is a farm on the shores of Berufjordur, where weather observation has been commenced since 1874. It's among the oldest weather stations in Iceland and holds the record for the country's highest temperature ever recorded, 31 C (87 F) on June 22, 1939. It's also claimed Teigarhorn reached 36 C (97 F) in September 1940 but is not recognized by the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Iceland rarely has temperatures above 30 C (86 F). It has occurred only five times since weather observations were commenced in the 19th century.

From aa are also offered bus tours to Vatnajokull National Park (one of Iceland's three NPs/2008-established, World Heritage Site since 2019) which encompasses the entire Vatnajokull Glacier.

By the early 19th century, Djupivogur was just 'a tiny port with a Danish colonial trading base'. Hans Jonatan (1784–1827), who had been a slave in Copenhagen, could escape there and became one of first people of colour in Iceland.

Djúpivogur is well suited to a quiet day ashore: explore the small village, walk to the waterfront egg sculptures, or head onto the surrounding peninsula for birdwatching. Glacier sightseeing involves a substantial road journey and needs a separate, carefully timed plan.

Easy independently: the village and Eggin í Gleðivík are practical on foot. Independent with some planning or transport: longer nature walks and nearby Teigarhorn. Organized excursion recommended: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and other distant glacier destinations.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Ships either berth at Gleðivík or anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore. Confirm your ship’s arrangements: the berth and tender landing are different starting points.

  • Gleðivík berth: approximately 0.8 km (0.5 mi) from the village center, around 15 minutes on foot. Follow the designated passenger exit through the working harbor.
  • Tender landing: approximately 0.4 km (0.2 mi) from the center, around 5–10 minutes on foot.
  • Local sightseeing: transport is unnecessary for the village highlights. For trips farther afield, arrange a tour or confirm transport in advance rather than relying on finding a taxi on arrival.

Tender operations depend on wind and sea conditions. Passengers with reduced mobility should check boarding requirements with the cruise line, even though the shore pontoon is accessible.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Village, Langabúð and the Egg Sculptures

Allow 2–3 hours for the harbor, older village streets, a café stop and Eggin í Gleðivík. The outdoor installation consists of 34 oversized stone eggs representing locally nesting birds, approximately 0.9 km (0.6 mi) from the village center. Allow 15–20 minutes each way for this part of the walk.

Langabúð, the historic red building by the old harbor, houses a cultural center and café. Check opening arrangements before planning an indoor visit. This is the simplest independent option and can be shortened easily if the weather deteriorates.

Bóndavarða Viewpoint and Búlandsnes Nature Walk

For more walking, head toward Bóndavarða, the cairn and viewpoint overlooking the village and surrounding landscape. Continue onto the Búlandsnes peninsula for coastal scenery, wetlands and birdwatching if conditions allow.

Allow 2–4 hours depending on your chosen route. Obtain a local trail map before leaving the village and choose a clear turnaround time. Beyond the streets, expect uneven ground, potentially wet paths and little shelter. The black-sand shoreline is a scenic walking destination rather than a bathing beach.

Teigarhorn Nature Reserve

Teigarhorn combines coastal scenery, geological interest and historic buildings beneath Búlandstindur. Arrange a short vehicle transfer and allow roughly 1–2 hours at the reserve, plus transport time. It is a better choice for a prearranged local outing than an improvised roadside walk from the ship.

Use the visitor paths and leave rocks and minerals in place. Confirm access separately if you want to enter the historic buildings.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach

These sights are a full-day excursion from Djúpivogur. Budget roughly 2½ hours each way by coach, depending on stops and conditions; outings commonly occupy around 7–8 hours. Much of the call is spent traveling.

An organized excursion is preferable, particularly when tendering. Book only after checking that its duration fits the actual time available ashore. Lagoon boat trips require separate confirmation and should not be assumed to be included. This option is unsuitable for a short call.

Self-Guided Walking Tour

Old Harbor and Eggs of Merry Bay

Start: Langabúð by the old harbor, reached from your designated passenger exit. Distance: approximately 2–2.5 km (1.2–1.6 mi) return from Langabúð. Pure walking time: 35–45 minutes. Recommended total: 1½–2½ hours. Difficulty: easy, mainly paved roads with gentle gradients and exposed waterfront sections.

  1. Langabúð: begin at the historic red building; visit the cultural center or café if open.
  2. Old harbor: pause for fishing-boat and fjord views while keeping clear of working areas.
  3. Older village streets: take a short look around the houses near the harbor before following signs toward Gleðivík.
  4. Eggin í Gleðivík: walk along the row of egg sculptures and allow time for photographs.
  5. Return to the old harbor: retrace the signed road to Langabúð, then continue to your tender landing or ship.

If your ship berths at Gleðivík, visit the eggs first after leaving the restricted quay area, then walk into the village and reverse the route for your return. Add the walk between Langabúð and your actual landing point to the route totals.

Practical Tips

  • Carry a waterproof outer layer and wear shoes with good grip. Wind and rain can make even a short waterfront walk uncomfortable.
  • Stay on established paths around nesting birds and respect seasonal signs or closures. Wildlife sightings depend on season and conditions.
  • For independent village sightseeing, aim to reach the tender landing at least 45–60 minutes before the advertised last tender; allow more if queues or weather warrant it.
  • For road excursions, agree a return time that includes a substantial delay allowance and any tender boarding time. Follow the ship’s published deadline.
