Enkhuizen is a North Sea/IJsselmeer/IJssel River cruise port and city in The Netherlands' North Holland province (West-Frisia region), with population around 19,000.
With a similar name is North Holland's town Huizen. It is also on IJsselmeer, approx 75 km / 45 mi to the south via Road N307 connecting highway A6/Rijksweg 6 with Road N302 (near Lelystad/Flevoland) and Road N50/Rijksweg 50 (Kampen/Overijssel).
Port Enkhuizen (locode NLENK) houses one of Holland's largest marinas.
As cruise port, Enkhuizen is included in the regular schedules of some of Europe's largest river cruise companies (travel brands targeting predominantly the German-speaking market) like Phoenix Reisen, Arosa, Nicko Cruises/fleet, Scylla's boat chartering clients (Riviera Travel UK/fleet, Tauck Travel USA/fleet), DCS Touristik/fleet.
A popular tourist destination is the city's Zuiderzeemuseum whose exhibitions depict the life of Zuiderzee's inhabitants before 1932 when the Afsluitdijk dam/causeway (Closure Dyke) was opened. The city's oldest building (dating back to the 16th century/1540) is called Drommedaris (at the left In the above photo).
The same-named municipality consists of Oosterdijk, Westeinde and Enkhuizen. Enkhuizen was among the harbor towns of Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie/Dutch East India Company (1602-1799) - just like Amsterdam and Hoorn. From these port cities was conducted overseas trade with the East Indies (Southeast Asia).
In 1355 the town received its city rights and in the mid-17th-century, it was at the peak of its might. However, because of various reasons, notably the harbors' silting up, Enkhuizen lost its first position to Amsterdam.
Riverboat tours are offered from Enkhuizen to Medemblik. Industrially, the city is home to several seed production companies and a plastics factory. Tourism is also a large part of the local economy.
A train station provides direct rail service from Enkhuizen to Amsterdam City, Amersfoort and Hoorn. The travel time to Amsterdam Centraal is ~ 1 hour. During summer, regularly scheduled passenger ferries link Enkhuizen with Medemblik, Stavoren and Urk. It's also possible to cycle or drive across Houtribdijk to Lelystad while passing under naviduct (navigable aqueduct) close to the Krabbersgat lock.
Enkhuizen is a compact harbor town where a cruise call can comfortably combine historic streets, waterfront views and a museum visit. Easy independently: the main sights are close together, and exploring the center generally requires no transport once you have reached the town-side harbor area.
Getting Ashore and Around
Confirm your vessel’s berth and pedestrian exit before setting off. The waterfront has several harbor areas, so the distance back to your ship depends on its actual mooring. Use the Drommedaris tower beside the old harbor as a convenient starting point for sightseeing.
Walking is the simplest way to explore central Enkhuizen. Streets are mostly flat, but brick paving, uneven surfaces and small bridges can make progress slower for visitors with limited mobility. Watch for bicycles when crossing streets or stepping out to take photographs.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Explore the Old Town and Harbors
Allow 2–3 hours for an unhurried walk past the Drommedaris, historic harbor quays, canal-side houses and the shopping streets around Westerstraat. Include the exterior of the Westerkerk and a café stop. This is the most flexible option for a short call because you can shorten the walk whenever needed.
The Drommedaris is a cultural venue rather than a tower you should assume is freely accessible. Treat it as an exterior sightseeing stop unless a visit or guided tour is confirmed.
Visit the Zuiderzeemuseum
The Zuiderzeemuseum is the main choice for a longer cultural visit. Its outdoor museum recreates life in communities around the former Zuiderzee, while the indoor Schathuys displays boats, traditional clothing, furniture and everyday objects.
Allow around 3–4 hours for the outdoor museum, or 1–2 hours for a more focused indoor visit, plus access time. The outdoor section operates seasonally; check the arrangements for your date before building the day around it.
The indoor and outdoor sections have different access arrangements. Check the pedestrian entrance and any museum-boat arrangements before leaving the ship, and allow for boarding or waiting time if using a boat. An independent visit is practical with this preparation.
Combine a Small Museum with a Relaxed Waterfront Visit
The Flessenscheepjesmuseum, devoted to ships in bottles, makes a compact addition near the Drommedaris. Allow approximately 30–60 minutes if it is open, then continue along the old harbor or stop for lunch. This combination suits passengers who prefer a shorter outing without committing most of the call to a large museum.
Self-Guided Walking Tour
Easy: Harbors, Historic Streets and Snouck van Loosenpark
Start and finish: Drommedaris. Approximate distance: 3 km (1.9 mi), excluding the walk from your berth. Walking time: 45–60 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours with photographs and a refreshment stop. The route is mostly flat, with brick paving and occasional bridge approaches.
- Drommedaris: begin beside the landmark gate tower overlooking the harbor.
- Oude Haven and the Spuihuisje: explore the waterfront and the small historic building housing the ships-in-bottles museum.
- Town hall on Breedstraat: follow the harbor-side streets toward its ornamental exterior.
- Zuiderkerk: continue through the old streets to view the church and tower from outside.
- Westerstraat and Westerkerk: walk along the central shopping street to the large historic church.
- Snouck van Loosenpark: turn toward the landscaped park for a quieter break.
- Return to the Drommedaris: head back toward the station and harbor area, then retrace the appropriate waterfront route to your ship.
Church interiors and museum stops depend on opening arrangements. The walk remains worthwhile without entering any buildings.
Longer Walk: Town Ramparts and IJsselmeer Views
For more walking, the marked Rondje Zuiderzee route starts at the railway station and follows the town walls and lakeside. It covers approximately 6.6 km (4.1 mi). Allow about 1.5–2 hours of walking, or 2.5–3 hours with pauses, plus the connection to your berth.
This is a moderate option because of its length and exposure to wind. Choose it in reasonable weather when you have ample time ashore; it is less suitable as an extra after a lengthy museum visit.
Practical Tips for Your Call
- Choose one main outing: a town walk and small museum combine easily; the outdoor Zuiderzeemuseum deserves a substantial part of the day.
- Check seasonal access: outdoor attractions, museum boats and individual historic buildings may have different operating periods.
- Prepare for waterfront weather: bring a windproof or waterproof layer, even when the town center feels sheltered.
- Plan the return from your actual berth: retain a time buffer before the ship’s stated all-aboard time and add extra allowance if returning by museum boat.
