Lauenburg an der Elbe is an Elbe River cruise port and town in Germany's Schleswig-Holstein state (Herzogtum Lauenburg district) with population around 12,000. The town is located on river's northern bank and east of Hamburg - Germany's 2nd largest city (after Berlin) with population over 1,8 million and country's largest seaport.

Lauenburg-Elbe is state's southernmost town. It was founded in 1182 by Bernard of the House of Ascania (1134-1212) - an ancestor of the Dukes of Lauenburg and Count of Anhalt and Ballenstedt in the period 1180-1212. The town was named after the Lowenborch Castle (built in 1182). Saxe-Lauenburg was a duchy until it was incorporated into Prussia's Schleswig-Holstein province in 1876. Until 1616 (when the castle burnt down) the town was duchy's capital moved to Ratzeburg in 1619). Lauenburg prospered due to its location on the Old Salt Route (primarily used for transportation of salt) and today the town is the southern terminus of Elbe-Lubeck Canal (aka Elbe-Trave Canal - 64-km / 40-mi long manmade waterway connecting Elbe and Trave rivers).

Town's best-known tourist attractions include Altstadt (Old Town with 17th-century buildings, mainly former homes of sailors), Maria-Magdalenen Kirche (13th-century church), narrow cobbled streets (all leading to Lauenburg Castle - the former residence of the Dukes of Lauenburg, now housing the municipal administration). Approx 25 km (16 mi) southwest is Luneburg - travel destination popular for its Palmschleuse (late-14th-century-built river lock/Europe's oldest).

As cruise port, Lauenburg an der Elbe is included in the regular schedules of some of Europe's largest river cruise companies - like CroisiEurope and Phoenix Reisen. Next tables show some Lauenburg-visiting cruisetours as ports sequences and prices per person (double occupancy rates).
