San Antonio is a port city in Chile's San Antonio Province (Valparaíso Region) with population around 90,000. By annual shipping traffic/handled freight volumes, Port San Antonio (locode CLSAI) is currently ranked South America's largest cargo port (surpassing even Chile's principal port Valparaíso).
The city is located north of the Maipo River's mouth, bordering Cartagena (north), Melipilla (east), and Maipo River (south).
In 2021, Puerto San Antonio handled 12,326 million cargo tons and a total of ~1,233 million TEUs/containers. San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI) occupies an area of approx 30 hectares / 74 acres (0,3 km2) and allows access to vessels with max draft 14 m / 46 ft. It has three docks with combined quay length 930 m / 3050 ft.
In 2023, STI was upgraded with two new China-made STS (Ship-to-Shore) cranes with capacity to handle Super Post-Panamax/largest container ships, plus two electric RTGs (Rubber Tyred Gantry) cranes. With the addition of the new TEU-handling cranes, the Port's annual TEU throughput capacity increased to 1,6 million containers. The equipment upgrade was part of the Port's USD 66 million renovation project to modernize its assets as the concession was extended through 2030.
Besides the Port's shipping industry, the city's economy is also based on commercial fishing, food industries and tourism. The tourism industry is largely based on seafood cuisine and viticulture/winemaking, with the largest/most visited resort vineyards being Matetic (Casablanca, near Valparaíso), Vina Casa Marin (near San Sebastian), Garces Silva Family Vineyard (Amayna brand), Vina Casa Marin (Lo Abarca brand), and Vina Chocalan (Malvilla brand).
