Serifos Island is part of Greece's Cyclades archipelago (in the Aegean Sea), located south of Kythnos Island and northwest of Sifnos Island. Serifos is part of Greece's Milos region (South Aegean) that also includes the islands Milos, Kimolos, Sifnos, plus several smaller-sized isles. Serifos has total land area approx 75 km2 (29 mi2) and population around 1,500.
Cruise ships and ferries to Serifos Island dock at Megalo Livadi (positioned on a bay at the southeastern coast). Port facilities include a large pier (for docking of large vessels) and a yacht marina (for boats). Ferry companies that serve the Piraeus-Serifos route include Seajets (14 weekly crossings, travel time ~2 hours), Aegean Speed Lines (6 weekly crossings, travel time ~2,5 hours), and Zante Ferries (6 weekly crossings, travel time ~4 hours).
The distance from Serifos to mainland Greece (Port Piraeus-Athens) is approx 170 km (105 mi). The island's economy started to develop in the late-19th-century, due to the exploitation of its substantial iron ore deposits. However, the mining industry declined in the 1960s, when the iron mines were closed. The island's current economy is heavily based on tourism.
The island's main town (largest settlement) is Chora, connected to Port Mega Livadi via road. The main tourist attractions are Aspros Pyrgos (ancient watchtower with preserved marble walls and interior stairs) and the Taxiarchs Monastery (16th-century, outside the Galani village) which is dedicated to the archangels/high-rank angels Gabriel and Michael.
Next table shows the 2-week "Treasures Of The Holy Land" itinerary (roundtrip from Athens) scheduled for 2023 by the ultra-luxury travel brand Seabourn Cruises for the ship Seabourn Encore.
