The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) reported a record-breaking 165,000 cruise passenger movements in March 2025, surpassing its previous high of approximately 155,000 set in March 2023. This milestone follows a record-setting year in 2024, during which the port handled over 1.2 million cruise passenger movements.
Port NOLA is the sixth-largest cruise port in the United States and uniquely offers both ocean-going and river cruise options. Its two terminals, Erato Street and Julia Street, are centrally located in downtown New Orleans, providing convenient access to the city's historic French Quarter and other cultural attractions.
The port's cruise operations significantly contribute to the local economy. Approximately 90% of cruise passengers travel from out of state, with 70% of those guests spending one or two days in New Orleans either before or after their cruise. This activity generates more than 300,000 hotel room nights and contributes over $125 million in local spending annually.
In 2024, major cruise lines continued their commitments to Port NOLA. CCL-Carnival Cruise Line finalized a 5-year agreement to base 2 year-round vessels—the Carnival Valor and Carnival Liberty—marking its 30th year operating from New Orleans. RCI-Royal Caribbean resumed service with the Brilliance of the Seas and plans to introduce the Mariner of the Seas in 2026. NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line extended its 5-year agreement, continuing voyages with the Norwegian Getaway and adding the Norwegian Escape later this year.
Port NOLA also serves as a homeport for 6 river cruise vessels, including those operated by ACL-American Cruise Lines and Viking. Notably, Viking's North American cruise, launched in 2022, was built in Louisiana.
The port continues to expand its cruise line partnerships, reflecting the growing global demand for New Orleans as a prime cruise destination.
