Independent with some planning or transport. Alexandria’s main sights are spread across a large, busy city. Central streets and the Corniche can be explored independently, but taxis or a pre-arranged car are useful for reaching the archaeological sites efficiently. A guided tour is preferable for visitors who want historical interpretation or several major sights in one day.

Cairo and the Giza pyramids require a very long excursion, with roughly 3–3.5 hours of driving each way. Choose this only during a sufficiently long port call, preferably through the cruise line or a reputable operator offering port pickup and a firm return plan.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Cruise ships normally dock at the passenger terminal inside Alexandria’s large Western Harbour rather than tendering. From the ship, passengers pass through the terminal area and continue to the port gate. Depending on the berth, reaching the gate may itself involve a walk of around 10–15 minutes.

• Walking: The edge of central Alexandria is approximately 1.5–2 km (0.9–1.2 mi) from the cruise terminal, but the exact distance depends on the berth and passenger exit. The surroundings are busy and walking conditions can be uneven.
• Taxis: Usually the most practical independent option. Confirm the destination and fare before departure if the vehicle is not metered. Keep small Egyptian-pound notes where possible.
• Ship transport: Some cruise lines may provide a shuttle or excursion transfer, but this varies by sailing and should be checked onboard.
• Public transport: Alexandria has trams and local buses, but crowded vehicles, limited visitor information and slow journeys make them less useful during a short port call.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Alexandria Highlights by Car

Allow approximately 5–7 hours for a practical circuit covering the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, Pompey’s Pillar, the Roman remains at Kom el-Dikka, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Citadel of Qaitbay. These places are distributed across the city, so a taxi, private car or guided tour saves considerable time.

The catacombs include underground chambers and stairs and may not suit visitors with limited mobility. A guide is valuable because relatively little survives above ground from ancient Alexandria.

Citadel, Waterfront and Historic Districts

For a less rushed day, take a taxi to the Citadel of Qaitbay and explore the western end of the Corniche. The citadel occupies the site traditionally associated with the ancient Pharos lighthouse. Nearby stops can include the fishing harbour, Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque exterior and the streets around Anfushi.

Allow 3–4 hours, including transport and time inside the citadel. This option is manageable independently, although traffic and wide road crossings require care.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Eastern Corniche

The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina contains a monumental reading room, museums and exhibition spaces, although access to individual areas can vary. Combine it with a walk along the seafront and, if time permits, the nearby archaeological remains at Kom el-Dikka.

Allow approximately 3–4 hours. A taxi from the port is recommended, followed by walking between nearby sights. Confirm the library’s visitor access and opening arrangements for the day of the call.

Cairo and the Giza Pyramids

This is an excursion rather than a local sightseeing option. The road journey normally takes about 3–3.5 hours each way and can be longer in traffic. A typical visit consumes 11–13 hours and leaves limited time at the attractions.

Organized excursion recommended. The trip is realistic only when the ship has a long stay in Alexandria. The cruise line’s excursion offers the greatest protection if traffic delays the return. Independent rail or bus travel is unsuitable for most same-day cruise visitors because of transfers, variable journey times and the distance between Cairo stations and Giza.

Self-Guided Waterfront Walk

Qaitbay Citadel to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

This seafront route is suitable for passengers who enjoy a substantial urban walk and do not need to cover the inland archaeological sites.

1. Take a taxi from the port to the Citadel of Qaitbay.
2. Visit the citadel and view the Eastern Harbour.
3. Walk past the fishing harbour toward Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque.
4. Continue along the Corniche beside the Eastern Harbour.
5. Pass the waterfront around Saad Zaghloul Square and central Alexandria.
6. Finish at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

Distance: approximately 5 km (3.1 mi). Pure walking time: about 1–1.5 hours. Recommended total: 4–5 hours with the citadel, waterfront stops and library. Difficulty: moderate, mainly flat but exposed to sun, traffic, noise and frequent road crossings.

Return to the ship by taxi rather than retracing the route. Allow extra time to negotiate traffic and to walk from the port gate back through the terminal area.

Practical Tips

• Alexandria traffic can be slow and unpredictable. Keep at least 60–90 minutes between the final attraction and the ship’s all-aboard time; allow substantially more after any trip outside the city.
• Use a taxi or booked vehicle when combining the catacombs, Pompey’s Pillar, Kom el-Dikka, the library and the citadel.
• Agree on whether a taxi fare covers one journey, waiting time or a complete sightseeing circuit.
• Carry water, sun protection and footwear suitable for uneven pavements and archaeological steps.
• Dress conservatively, especially when entering or approaching religious sites.
• Check onboard instructions for the exact passenger exit, shuttle arrangements and required identification before leaving the ship.
