Doha Port (locode ) is Qatar's largest/principal port and capital city, with population around 2,4 million and total area approx 132 km2 (51 mi2). Port Doha (locode QADOH) is on the Persian/Arabian Gulf. Over half of Qatar's population lives in Doha City or its suburbs. The city is also Qatar's commercial capital and one of the Middle East's financial centers. There is a same-named seaport (Doha Port/Mina Doha) in Kuwait's Al Kuwayt Governorate.

The coastal territory (Trucial Coast) was ruled by Britain as part of the empire's strategy to secure safe passage through the Arabian Gulf for the merchant ships of the East India Company (1600-1874). The agreement with the local sheiks (signed in 1820) acknowledged British authority in the Gulf and practically ended the piracy and the slave trade.

The town of Doha was established in the early-19th-century as an extension of Al Bidda (British Qatar's largest city). The country was a British protectorate between 1916-71. Doha became the country's capital in 1971 when Qatar declared independence from the UK.

The city was selected as a host of renowned sporting events, such as "2006 Asian Games", "2011 Pan Arab Games", and most of the games at "2011 AFC Asian Cup". The 20th "World Petroleum Conference" was held here in December 2011. Doha also hosted "2012 UNFCCC Climate Negotiations" and "2022 FIFA World Cup".

In May 2015, the city was officially recognized as one of the "New 7 Wonders Cities" - along with Beirut (Lebanon), Durban (South Africa), Havana (Cuba), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), La Paz (Mexico) and Vigan (Philippines).

Doha City houses the headquarters of numerous domestic and international corporations and organizations, including Qatar's largest oil and gas companies RasGas, Qatargas, and Qatar Petroleum. The city's economy is built primarily on the natural gas and oil industries.

Port Doha

Qatar's cruising season is during winter (October through April). The seaport is managed by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA).

During season 2017-2018, TUI Cruises (German shipping company) visited Doha 7x times, bringing ~17,500 tourists to Qatar. The same season was a record-breaker (~65,000 tourists, or 39% increase over 2016). Port Doha was visited by a total of 22 vessels plus 1 superyacht. The Port received 5x maiden calls (MSC Splendida, Mein Schiff 5, Crystal Serenity, Crystal Symphony, Europa 2). Data showed 86% disembarking passengers, of whom 53% booked city tours and 18% booked desert safaris.

The main factor for the Port's cruising business growth was the 2016-introduced free 96-hours transit visa for international tourists. Seaport's largest visiting liners so far are MSC Splendida (MSC) and Mein Schiff 5 (TUI). In 2017, Splendida (max capacity 3900 passengers) replaced MSC Fantasia.

For season 2018-2019 were booked 43 ships (of which 10 with maiden port calls) and were expected 140,000+ tourists (passengers and crew). The season had 5x 2-ship days. During season 2019-2020, the cruise port expected nearly 200,000 visitors, targeting an annual volume of ~0,5 million passengers by the year 2026.

For season 2019-2020 the cruise port had scheduled a total of 74 ship calls, with estimated 186,000+ passengers plus 61,000+ crew. During the season here was homeported Costa Diadema, with booked 16 berthings (planned roundtrips).

Doha plans a port redevelopment project budgeted ~QR 2 billion (Qatari Riyals, ~USD 550 million).

In 2021-Q1, the French luxury travel brand Ponant chartered the ship Le Champlain to Qatar Airways Holidays. The airline (via partnership with Discover Qatar) launched the "Luxury Coastal Cruise of Qatar" program custom-made for citizens and residents of the country. The exclusive program was based on a 3-night Persian Gulf itinerary (leaving roundtrip from Doha). The coastal sightseeing and exploration activities included snorkeling (at Al Ashat Island), gliding (over Khor Al-Udaid channel), scenic cruising for marine and wildlife viewings (hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, dolphins, dugongs, flamingos). The shipboard and ashore enrichment programs were led by expert tour guides - marine biologists, naturalists, ornithologists. Le Champlain's Qatar cruise season (late-March - April 2021) included 6 consecutive departures out of Doha, with all-inclusive prices starting from QR 4990 (USD 1370 / EUR 1140) per person with double occupancy.

For season 2021-2022, the Port had booked a total of 30 ship calls, of which 4 were maiden port calls and 4 by luxury ships. The Qatar Tourism Authority also developed special onboard flight programs for foreign cruisers who stay overnight in Doha for their departure and return flights, as such tourists start and end their flights from/in Qatar.

For season 2023-2024, Port Doha had booked 120 cruise ship berthings, with expected ~200,000 tourists. Eventually, the Port handled 73 vessels and 378,677 passengers, representing a 38% growth in visitor numbers and a 33% increase in ship calls compared to season 2022-2023.

For season 2025-2026 (November-May), Doha Port is scheduled to receive 73 cruise ship calls, including 40 partial turnarounds, 15 full turnarounds, and 3 maiden visits.

Doha Qatar cruise terminal

Before the inauguration of Qatar’s new cruise port terminal Hamad Port Visitors Centre, large-sized ships docked at the Hamad Port (cargo port).

The Port is located off Doha Corniche - a several kilometers long esplanade/waterfront promenade along Doha Bay. Before the port redevelopment, the largest passenger vessels able to dock at Doha Port were with LOA length under 250 m (820 ft).

Due to the increasing number of cruise tourists, Qatar's Tourism Authority, Ports Management Company and Ministry of Interior took measures to facilitate the passengers' disembarkation process and entry procedures.

Following an investment in new security technologies and close collaboration with cruise ship operators, passenger processing/disembarkation time was reduced to just several minutes.

As part of the new process, cruise ship tourist (passenger and crew) passport details are shared with Qatar's immigration office 48 hours before the ship arrives. This allows tourists to be cleared for entry before the ship docks.

Due to the short port stay duration (~8 hours), passengers and crew are eligible for transit visas (free 96-hour visas), which further eases the entry process. In 2017, Port Doha was visited by its largest cruise vessel so far - MSC Splendida. The ship docked in Doha on December 20, bringing over 3900 passengers and 1400 crew.

Port Doha's new Grand Cruise Terminal was slated for opening/inauguration for FIFA World Cup 2022 (Nov 20 thru Dec 18). The new facility has a large terminal building (sized 24000 m2 / 258334 ft2, divided into 2x terminals) and docking capacity to handle/berth 2x mega-ships (max 12000 cruisers/passengers + crew) simultaneously on a single wharf.

The Grand Terminal buildings have departure and arrival halls, cafe, duty-free shops, parking areas (separate stands for taxis and buses), as well as a huge aquarium (interconnecting both terminals) and an art gallery. A large terrace (on floor 2) stretches across both buildings.

The unique aquarium occupies an area of 2805 m2/30200 ft2 and has a single tank (height 9 m/30 ft) holding 6+ million liters of water (~6000 m3). Two 17-m/56-ft long tunnels provide panoramic views of the marine life. The largest viewing panel is sized 17x5,7 m/56x19 ft.

TKE Doha (elevator service company) provided the cruise terminal's passenger transportation systems (10 lifts, 8 escalators, 4 moving walkways), including their design, manufacture, and installation. The equipment was manufactured in China (Zhongshan). The escalators include 4 TKE velino escalators traversing the aquarium tunnel.

Doha is independent with some planning or transport. Cruise ships normally dock at the Grand Cruise Terminal in Old Doha Port, beside the Mina District. A short taxi ride brings you to Souq Waqif or the main museums, while Mina offers an easy outing close to the ship. For a first visit, one museum followed by the souq is a realistic combination.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Ships normally berth alongside, rather than tender. The Grand Cruise Terminal has two passenger terminals, so note your arrival building and return entrance before leaving.

  • Walking: Mina District is the closest sightseeing area. Follow the designated passenger exit and pedestrian route; the distance from your gangway depends on the berth and terminal arrangements. Central Doha is farther than it may appear across the water.
  • Taxis: Karwa taxis are a straightforward choice for a short call. Souq Waqif and the National Museum of Qatar are approximately 5–10 minutes away in light traffic; allow longer for queues and busy roads.
  • Shuttles: City-centre shuttle services may be available. Confirm that day’s destination, fare, last return and boarding point with the ship or terminal staff.
  • Metro: Souq Waqif and National Museum are the closest stations, but neither is at the cruise terminal. The metro is more useful once you have reached the city than for the initial journey from the ship.

For the return journey, specify the Grand Cruise Terminal at Old Doha Port and your terminal entrance.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Souq Waqif and the Old City

Allow 2–3 hours, plus transfers. Explore the spice and perfume lanes, browse textiles and handicrafts, visit the Falcon Souq when shops are open, and stop for coffee or a meal. This is an easy independent outing with short taxi transfers and mostly level walking.

Many shops close during the middle of the day, and Friday mornings can be quiet. Restaurants may keep different hours. If your call extends into the evening, the souq is generally livelier later in the day, provided this fits the ship’s return deadline.

Choose One Major Museum

Allow 1.5–2 hours inside the Museum of Islamic Art, or 2–3 hours at the National Museum of Qatar, plus transfers. The Museum of Islamic Art suits visitors interested in ceramics, metalwork, textiles and decorative arts; its waterfront setting also offers skyline views. The National Museum uses immersive galleries to explain Qatar’s landscape, maritime traditions and development.

Either works independently and can be paired with Souq Waqif on a longer call. Check opening arrangements before setting out: the Museum of Islamic Art normally closes on Wednesdays, the National Museum on Tuesdays, and both normally open in the early afternoon on Fridays. Temporary gallery closures may affect what you can see.

Mina District: Stay Close to the Ship

Allow 1–2 hours. Walk among the pastel-coloured buildings, browse small shops, look around the fish market and pause at a waterfront café. This is the simplest choice for a short call or for passengers who prefer to avoid city transfers.

The area is mostly level, with some cobbled paving and exposed waterfront stretches. Keep the walk flexible in hot weather, and check the pedestrian route back to your terminal before exploring farther.

Katara Cultural Village and Beach

Allow 3–4 hours including transfers. Katara combines pedestrian lanes, mosque architecture, galleries, an amphitheatre and a beachfront. A taxi makes this practical independently; allow roughly 20–30 minutes each way in ordinary traffic, with additional time at busy periods.

Focus on Katara rather than adding several northern Doha stops. For swimming, confirm the chosen beach’s current admission arrangements, facilities and swimwear rules before travelling. The Corniche and Mina waterfront are better suited to strolling than to a beach day.

Desert and Inland Sea Excursion

Organized excursion recommended. Trips towards Sealine and Khor Al Adaid offer dunes and desert scenery, but consume a substantial part of the call. Reaching the desert entrance typically takes around 45–60 minutes, followed by off-road travel. Many excursions take approximately four hours or longer; confirm the full terminal-to-terminal duration.

Book an experienced operator with cruise-port collection and an agreed return time. Off-road driving requires a suitable vehicle and driver. Dune-bashing involves jolting movements; ask about a gentler itinerary if necessary. Treat this as the main activity rather than trying to combine it with extensive city sightseeing.

Self-Guided Walking Tour

Souq Waqif and Msheireb Loop — Easy

Start: Souq Waqif’s waterfront-facing entrance, reached by taxi or a shuttle if its drop-off is suitable. Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi), depending on market detours. Pure walking time: 40–50 minutes. Total time: 2–3 hours with browsing and a refreshment stop.

  1. Souq Waqif entrance: Orient yourself and note a suitable return pickup point.
  2. Main market lanes: Explore the spice, perfume and textile shops.
  3. Souq Waqif Art Centre: Look inside if open, or continue through the surrounding lanes.
  4. Falcon Souq: Browse the specialist shops when open; ask before photographing people or birds.
  5. Al Koot Fort exterior: Pause for a view of the fort without relying on interior access.
  6. Msheireb Downtown and Barahat Msheireb: Use designated crossings to reach the pedestrian streets and central square.
  7. Return to Souq Waqif: Retrace the short connection for your taxi or confirmed shuttle.

The route is mostly flat, with paving, occasional kerbs and road crossings. Market lanes provide some shade, but heat can make even this short circuit tiring. Museum visits in Msheireb require additional time and separate opening checks. Return to the cruise terminal by vehicle.

Practical Tips for Your Call

  • Build in a return margin: For central Doha sightseeing, aim to reach the terminal at least one hour before all-aboard, allowing additional time for traffic, shuttle queues and terminal procedures. Follow any earlier deadline given by the ship.
  • Plan around the heat: Carry water and sun protection. Combine short outdoor walks with indoor stops, particularly near midday.
  • Dress for the setting: Clothing covering shoulders and knees is a practical choice for markets and cultural attractions. Mosque visits may require additional covering and have restricted visiting times.
  • Check the day’s opening hours: Friday and Ramadan schedules can affect museums, shops, restaurants and transport. Avoid building a short call around an unconfirmed opening.
  • Keep the itinerary compact: One museum and Souq Waqif make a more manageable first visit than attempting the old city, Katara, The Pearl and the desert in one call.
