Eidfjord is a municipality in the Norwegian Hordaland county. The municipality is situated in the traditional district of Hardanger. Its administrative center is the village of Eidfjord, where the majority of the population lives. The other major population center is the village of Ovre Eidfjord.
Eidfjord is located at the end of Eidfjorden, an inner branch of the big Hardangerfjorden. The village of Eidfjord is a prime cruise ship port of call. Eidfjord has some tourist sites, like Sima Power Plant that is built into the mountain itself, Mabodalen Valley, and Voringsfossen Waterfall which has a free fall of 597 ft (182 m). Large parts of Hardangervidda (Europe's biggest mountain plateau) are situated in Eidfjord. The Hardangervidda Natursenter, visitors centre and museum for Hardangervidda National Park, is situated in Ovre Eidfjord.
In 2023, Eidfjord plans to introduce shoreside electricity/power supply for cruise vessels. Eidfjord's Simakraft Hydropower Station is one of Norway's main suppliers of hydroelectricity.
Hardangerfjord
Hardangerfjord is Norway's 2nd-longest and the world's 4th-longest fjord. Located in Hordaland (Hardanger), its length is 179 km (111 mi) starting from the sea and going into the country's mountainous interior. Its innermost point is the port town Odda, and the outermost part is the Bomlafjorden.
Hardangerfjord is among Norway's most popular tourist travel destinations, becoming a major industry for aal the communities located along the fjord. Fish farming is another major industry for the Hardangerfjord towns and villages, with fish farms producing 40,000+ tons of fish (mainly salmon and rainbow trout) annually. The Norwegian brand bottled water "Isklar" (translated "ice clear") is from the Hardangerfjord's melt-water and is distributed worldwide.
Cruise ports in Hardangerfjord include Eidfjord, Rosendal, Jondal, Ulvik, Odda.
Eidfjord cruise terminal
Eidfjord cruise port terminal was inaugurated in May 2005. The port has 2 pier berths for docking of cruise vessels.
Eidfjord offers two practical ways to spend a cruise call: explore the village and nearby walking trails independently, or book transport inland to Vøringsfossen waterfall. The village is easy to reach from the central cruise quay, but the main waterfall and mountain attractions require road transport.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Ships normally dock at the cruise quay in central Eidfjord. Once outside the controlled quay area, the tourist information office, waterfront, cafés and shops are only a few minutes away on foot. A shuttle is unnecessary for visiting the village.
Check your ship’s arrival instructions, as anchorage and tender arrangements are also possible. If tendering, allow additional time for both landing and the return queue.
For inland sightseeing, book an excursion, sightseeing bus, taxi or rental car in advance. Confirm the exact meeting point and return arrangements. If using public transport, check the timetable for your date and the walk from the arrival stop to your intended attraction; do not assume buses provide a convenient cruise-call connection.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Village and Waterfront
Easy independently. Allow 1–2 hours for a relaxed look around the waterfront, guest harbour and village shops, with a café stop. This is the simplest choice for a short call or unsettled weather. The central waterfront involves much less climbing than the Hæreid route.
Vøringsfossen Waterfall
Independent with prebooked transport. The drive through Måbødalen takes approximately 30 minutes each way. At the falls, viewing platforms overlook the waterfall and gorge, while paths and a step bridge connect different parts of the site.
Allow roughly 2.5–3 hours for a return outing with time to explore. Sightseeing buses offer different visit lengths, so check how much time is actually spent at the waterfall. A ship excursion is a straightforward alternative when the call is short.
The complete viewpoint circuit includes stairs and changes of level. Visitors with limited mobility should confirm the drop-off location and accessible viewpoints before booking. The step bridge is optional; you can enjoy the falls without completing the full circuit.
Norwegian Nature Centre in Øvre Eidfjord
Independent with transport, or part of an organized excursion. The centre is approximately 7 km (4.3 mi) from Eidfjord village. Its indoor exhibitions and panoramic film introduce Norwegian landscapes, wildlife and geology, making it a useful option for families or wet weather.
Allow around 1–1.5 hours inside, plus transfers. It can be combined with Vøringsfossen, but choose a tour that explicitly includes both stops and enough visiting time. This is a visitor centre, rather than a walk on the Hardangervidda plateau.
Self-Guided Walking Tour
Hæreid Loop: River, Lake and Burial Mounds
Moderate: approximately 5.5 km (3.4 mi), with around 90 minutes of walking. Allow 2–2.5 hours for photographs, interpretation and rests. Start at the tourist information office near the cruise quay and collect the map for the yellow-marked route.
- Tourist information office: confirm the route and current path conditions before setting off.
- Eio River: follow the mapped route across the bridge and along the river towards the lake.
- Eidfjordvatnet: pause at the sandy lakeshore and photo frame before the uphill section.
- Hæreid terrace: climb to the farmland and burial mounds dating from the Iron and Viking ages. Keep to the paths through this protected landscape.
- Hodna viewpoint: stop for views over the village, fjord and surrounding mountains.
- Village waterfront: follow the marked descent towards the fjord and return through the village to the quay.
Expect paved and gravel surfaces, uneven sections, an uphill climb and a steeper descent. Wear shoes with good grip, particularly after rain. For a gentler alternative, follow the riverside section towards the lake and retrace your steps, turning back before the climb.
Practical Tips for Your Call
- Choose one main outing: Vøringsfossen followed by a short village stroll is a manageable combination. Add the full Hæreid loop only if your call and energy allow.
- Prepare for changing weather: carry a waterproof layer. Waterfall viewpoints and inland stops can feel colder and windier than the quay.
- Check seasonal access: snow, ice or maintenance can affect mountain paths and viewpoints. Stay behind barriers and follow local notices.
- Leave a return margin: for an independent road outing, aim to reach Eidfjord at least an hour before the ship’s all-aboard time. Allow more if tendering or conditions are uncertain.
