Eltmann is a Main River cruise port and town in Germany's Bavaria state (Lower Franconia/Unterfranken region, Hassberge district)) with population around 5,000. The town is on the river's south bank, approx 18 km (11 mi) west of Bamberg. Eltmann is also part of Naturpark Steigerwald (1988-established Nature Park in North Bavaria comprising an area of 1280 km2 / 495 mi2).
As cruise port, Eltmann was first included in the 2022 schedule of one of Europe's largest river cruise companies - AmaWaterways. Eltmann is included as call port in the company's repositioning cruise from Luxembourg to Germany (Nuremberg). The 7-night cruisetour was initially priced from USD 2930 / EUR 2475 per person (double-occupancy cabin rates).

Bundesstrasse 26 (highway) passes through Eltmann, Autobahn 70 has an interchange adjacent to Eltmann. Deutsche Bahn (railway company) links via trains that stop at the Ebelsbach-Eltmann station. Tourist attractions include Wallburg (11th-century watchtower, bridge-connected to a castle), Wallfahrtskirche Mariaheimsuchung (mid-18th-century church), Kreuzkapelle (Chapel of the Holy Cross, early-17th-century), Olbergkapelle (13th-century chapel / town's oldest building), Steigerwald (featuring long walking and cycling trails, popular for hiking and wildlife viewing), promenade (riverside street). Eltmann has 4 breweries and every July here is held a beer festival with traditional food and live music and entertainment.
Town's current economy is based on agriculture, viniculture (winegrowing and production), light manufacturing, retail and tourism.
Eltmann offers a quiet Main River stop with a compact town center, riverside paths and an uphill walk to the Wallburg ruins. It can also serve as a gateway to Bamberg, which requires a separate transfer.
Independent sightseeing: Easy independently for the town and riverside once your berth is confirmed. Wallburg requires a sustained climb. Bamberg is practical with planned transport, while an organized excursion is convenient for shorter calls.
Getting Ashore and Around
River cruise ships use a landing stage at Eltmann. Confirm the actual berth and pedestrian exit with the crew before setting out; the recreational slipway and other river access points should not be confused with your ship’s landing.
From the central Mainlände riverfront, the Marktplatz is a short walk inland via Mainstraße. The town center is compact enough to explore on foot. Do not rely on finding a taxi waiting at the landing stage; arrange one ahead if you want to travel farther.
For independent travel to Bamberg, regional trains run from Ebelsbach-Eltmann station, across the Main from Eltmann. The train journey can take around 12–20 minutes, but reaching the station, waiting for a service and continuing from Bamberg station to the old town add substantially to the trip. Check the timetable and any engineering works for your date.
Best Ways to Spend Your Call
Eltmann Town Center and Riverside
Allow 1–2 hours for the Marktplatz, the decorative town hall exterior and the parish church of St. Michael and St. John the Baptist, followed by a café stop or a walk beside the Main. This is the simplest option for a short call, with mostly gentle terrain and no transport needed from the central riverfront.
The small Heimatmuseum on Brunnenstraße adds local crafts and everyday-life displays, but visits are by arrangement. Include it only if access has been confirmed.
Wallburg Ruins and Valley Views
Allow approximately 1.5–2.5 hours from the town center for the climb, time around the surviving tower and the descent. This suits passengers comfortable with steep uphill walking and uneven surfaces; wear shoes with good grip, particularly after rain.
The tower interior is not routinely open every day. The municipality describes openings on fine-weather Sundays, indicated by the town flag flying from the tower. Confirm access locally and plan the walk around the ruins and hillside setting rather than assuming a tower climb will be available.
Bamberg Old Town
Choose Bamberg if you want the main sightseeing excursion of the call. A prearranged car or coach transfer typically needs roughly 25–35 minutes each way, depending on the berth, traffic and drop-off point. Allow around 4–5 hours overall for transfers and an unhurried old-town visit.
Concentrate on the Old Town Hall and its river bridges, the fishermen’s houses of Little Venice, and Cathedral Square. The cathedral area involves uphill streets and cobbles. A brewery meal or drink is possible, but leave time for the return journey. An organized excursion is preferable when the call is short or the ship will move during the outing.
Main Riverside Walk toward Maria Limbach
For a longer, mostly level outing, the published walking route from Mainstraße to Maria Limbach pilgrimage church covers approximately 4.3 km (2.7 mi) each way. It follows the river corridor toward Limbach, with some roadside sections and a main-road crossing near the church.
Allow 3–3.5 hours for the approximately 8.6 km (5.3 mi) return walk and a brief visit. This is suitable for confident walkers on a longer call. Check church access before leaving; use a prearranged transfer if you prefer to avoid walking both ways.
Self-Guided Walking Route
Easy: Riverfront and Town Center
Start and finish: Mainlände at Mainstraße, after reaching it from your confirmed landing stage. Distance: approximately 1.5–2 km (0.9–1.2 mi), depending on the riverside extension. Walking time: 25–40 minutes. Recommended total: 1–1.5 hours.
- Mainlände: Begin with views over the Main and note your route back to the ship.
- Mainstraße: Walk inland toward the town center.
- Marktplatz: Look around the square and the town hall exterior.
- Parish church: Visit briefly if open and no service is taking place.
- Brunnenstraße: Explore the central streets; enter the Heimatmuseum only with confirmed access.
- Main riverfront: Retrace your way to Mainlände, adding a short out-and-back riverside stroll if time permits.
The route is mostly gentle, with paved streets, occasional uneven surfaces and road crossings. The Wallburg climb is a separate, more demanding extension.
Returning to the Ship
- Confirm whether the ship remains in Eltmann or passengers rejoin it elsewhere after excursions.
- For Bamberg, arrange the return transport before leaving and allow at least an additional hour beyond the expected journey before all-aboard.
- For local walks, keep at least 30 minutes spare and follow the crew’s all-aboard instructions.
- Check Sunday and holiday openings before relying on shops, cafés, the museum or tower access.
