Grundarfjordur is a port town in western Iceland, located on Snæfellsnes peninsula's northern part. The town has population around 1000, and is between the sea and the Snaefell (aka Kirkjufell) mountain which forms a small peninsula.

Grundarfjordur is one of Iceland's oldest fishing settlements. Its natural harbor is a waterway area dominated by the Snaefell stratovolcano and its Glacier - where the entrance to the Earth's center can be found, according to Jules Verne's book "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (science fiction novel published in 1864).

Around 1800, French merchants arrived in Iceland and lived in Grundarfjordur. They built here a hospital and a church. The town became rich via the fishing industry. Its former wealth is reflected by the luxurious houses being built. A road to nearby Stykkisholmur crosses the large lava field Berserkjahraun.
