Isla Guy Fawkes are two crescent-shaped uninhabited isles located in close proximity (to the northwest) of Santa Cruz Island. The entire Galapagos Archipelago is part of Ecuador. The Province's capital city is Baquerizo Moreno (on San Cristobal Island), while Puerto Ayora (on Santa Cruz) is the group's commercial center.
For the first time (as a regularly scheduled for visits Galapagos cruisetour destination) Isla Guy Fawkes was included in 2021 with the Silversea Expedition's new ship (2020-built/2021-inaugurated) Silver Origin. The island was part of the company's modified "WESTERN ITINERARY" (from San Cristobal to Baltra) visiting the islands Bartolome (Kicker Rock/Roca Leon Dormido), Santiago (Buccaneer Cove), Isabela (Punta Vicente Roca), Fernandina (Playa Espumilla, Punta Espinoza), Isabela (Caleta Tagus Cove, Elizabeth Bay), Floreana (Post Office Bay), Islote Champion (near Floreana), Floreana (Punta Cormorant), Santa Cruz (Los Gemelos, Fausto Llerena Breeding Center, Puerto Ayora, Cerro Dragon, Playa Las Bachas), Isla Guy Fawkes, Santa Cruz (Bahia Borrero).
When first discovered, on the island there was a small population of sealions.
The island is best known for being named after Guy/Guido Fawkes (1570-1606) - a member of an English Catholic group (led by Robert Catesby) involved in the 1605's Gunpowder Treason Plot. Aka "Jesuit Treason", the plot was to kill King James VI of Scotland (1566-1625) by blowing up the House of Lords (Parliament building in Westminster City, London, England) on November 5, 1605. The conspirators planned to restore the Catholic monarchy from the Church of England.
In the UK, the failed Gunpowder Plot is commemorated annually with the "Guy Fawkes Night" (aka Bonfire Night) - a November 5th festivities featuring a fireworks display and an effigy (of Guy Fawkes) which is burned on a bonfire.
