Hooker Island (Ostrov Gukera) is an uninhabited island in central Franz Josef Land (archipelago in Arctic Russia), with land area 460 km2 (178 mi2) and highest elevation point (ice dome Kupol Dzhensona) 576 m / 1890 ft.
The island is neighboured by Leigh-Smith Island (east), Scott-Keltie Island (northwest), Eaton Island (west), Newton Island (south), May Island (southwest) and Royal Society Island (northeast).
Cruise ships visiting Hooker Island anchor at Tikhaya Bay - an unglaciated area on the western side. Near the bay (at Rubini Rock, shoreside) can be found a large seabird colony, Hooker Island is often visited by Russian icebreakers.
During an aerial survey, in July 1931, Hooker Island was visited by the German-built (hydrogen-filled) airship Graf Zeppelin. During WW2 (1939-45), German military personnel was marooned here (1941 through 1945). The remainder is a graveyard and 2 buildings still exist. Tikhaya Bay is a former Soviet polar research base, with a meteorological station operating between 1929-1963.
The island was visited by the superyacht Silver Explorer during Silversea Expeditions' Northwest Passage cruise in 2019 (Aug 10 - Sept 6).
