Other local attractions and tourist sights include the Franck Haus (townsman's house/1745-built Baroque building owned by the wine merchant Franz Valentin Franck/1702-77, owned by the town since 1987, now housing permanent exhibits as well as privately held exhibitions), St Laurentius Kirche (13th-century church), Alte Mainbrucke (1845-opened bridge constructed with red sandstone blocks), Alte Stadt (the Old Town with its timber-frame traditional houses), Hauptpromenade (Main Promenade), Marktplatz (Marketplace with the Fischerbrunnen fountain), Kreuzbergkapelle (Kreuzberg Chapel/1890).

The settlement was established in the 8th century on the lands owned by the Holzkirchen Monastery (owned by the Fulda Abbey). It received town status in the 14th century (1397 AD). The town started to grow and prosper during the Reformation (when its citizens turned to Protestantism).

The town as "Marktheidenfeld" was first mentioned in the mid-17th century (1649) to distinguish it from Schweinfurt's Heidenfeld Monastery. In 1814, the Grand Duchy of Wurzburg (1805-1814) lost this territory and passed it to the Kingdom of Bavaria (1806-1918).
