Puerto Madryn is a port city in the province of Chubut (Argentina, Patagonia). It's the capital of Biedma Department, and has about 94,000 inhabitants according to the last census in 2010. The town is protected by Golfo Nuevo, which is formed by Península Valdés and Punta Ninfas. It's an important centre for tourists who want to visit the natural attractions of Península Valdes and the coast.
Puerto Madryn is one of Argentina's all 4 cruise terminals with capacity to handle Transatlantic cruise liners - together with Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata (approx 390 km / 240 ml south of Buenos Aires) and Ushuaia.
The new shopping mall in the city centre helped tourism significantly, making Puerto Madryn more attractive for both international and domestic tourists who visit Patagonia. It's twinned with Nefyn, a little town on Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, the result of its link with Welsh culture since Welsh settlement in Argentina. Puerto Madryn is home to a couple of football clubs: Deportivo Madryn that currently play in Torneo Argentino B, and Club Social y Atlético Guillermo Brown, who play in Nacional B. A basketball team, Deportivo Puerto Madryn, plays in Liga Nacional de Básquetbol (LNB). Their home arena is known as Deportivo Puerto Madryn Arena.
Puerto Madryn cruise terminal
Puerto Madryn is among the ports of call on itineraries that include cruising through the Patagonian channels and Chilean fjords in the Tierra del Fuego provinces of Chile and Argentina.
Puerto Madryn port's cruise pier (Almirante Storni dock) was expanded in 2016-2017. The expansion project was budgeted with USD 380 million. The contractor was the company "Dragados y Obras Portuarias". The project also included repairing of the main viaduct - bridge connecting the port's entrance with its cargo operations area. The extended pier now allows berthing of larger cruise ships, which means more tourists to the Patagonian region.
