Riol (Germany Rhineland-Palatinate)

Riol is a Moselle River cruise port and town in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate state (Trier-Saarburg district) with population around 1,500. The town is located near Trier (both part of Trier-Saarburg) and also belongs to Verbandsgemeinde Schweich an der Romischen Weinstrasse (the Roman Wine Route) located northeast of Trier.

Riol is on the river's south bank, and between Longuich and Mehring. South, at distance approx 800 m, runs the Mosel-Saarbrucken section of A1 Highway (BAB 1 / Autobahn 1) linking Heiligenhafen (Baltic Sea) with Lubeck, Hamburg, Bremen, Dortmund, Koln/Cologne, Trier and Saarbrucken (Saarland's capital city / A1's terminus).

The settlement was officially founded by the Romans in the 1st-century AD (named Rigodulum) after they defeated the Celtic tribe Treverer. In late-15th-century, the town was mentioned for the first time in a document (as "Riolsburg"). Best-known tourist attractions include Roman villa ruins, Riu Palace St Martin (church built on Roman foundations and featuring a Romanesque bell tower), Rioler Romerberg (vineyard with wineries and wine bars), Zum Wohl Riol (held in June annual wine-themed festival with wine tastings on June's Saturdays), Freizeitpark Triolago (amusement park with a lake, accommodations, recreational activities).
