Cochem (Germany Rhineland-Palatinate)

Cochem is one of the easiest Moselle ports to explore independently. River cruise ships normally dock in the Cond district on the right bank, opposite the historic center. From most berths, passengers can walk across the Moselle bridge and reach the Old Town in about 10–20 minutes. The main limitation is the steep climb to Reichsburg Castle.

Getting from the River Cruise Berth

The hotel-ship berths are generally on the Cond side of the Moselle. Walk toward the main bridge, cross the river and continue to Endertplatz or the waterfront entrance to the Old Town. Taxis and local buses are available in town, but they are unnecessary for the central sights.

Confirm your ship’s exact berth and gangway location before leaving, particularly when several vessels are moored together. Passengers may occasionally need to walk through another vessel to reach shore.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Cochem Old Town

Allow 1.5–2 hours for the compact center. The main sights include Marktplatz, the Baroque town hall, St Martin’s Fountain, half-timbered houses, St Martin’s Church and surviving medieval gates such as Enderttor and Martinstor. The narrow streets are best explored on foot, although some are cobbled and gently sloping.

Visit Reichsburg Castle

Allow approximately 2–3 hours from the town center, including the climb, views and a castle tour. The paved and cobbled route from Marktplatz via Schlossstrasse has no steps but is consistently steep. Walking from central Cochem generally takes 25–45 minutes, depending on pace.

Castle interiors are normally visited on a guided tour. A seasonal public shuttle, line 701, operates from Cochem during part of the year, but it stops about 150–200 meters (165–220 yards) below the castle and a steep final approach remains. Check the day’s tour and shuttle schedules before setting out.

Ride the Cochem Chairlift

The chairlift climbs Pinnerberg to viewpoints above the Moselle valley. Allow around 1.5–2 hours for the ride, photographs and a short walk near the upper station. The lower station is within walking distance of the center. Operation is seasonal and weather-dependent, so confirm it is running before leaving the ship.

Visit the Bundesbank Bunker

This former Cold War currency bunker is in the hillside above Cochem-Cond. Entry is by guided visit rather than casual walk-in sightseeing, and availability can be limited. Reserve ahead and allow roughly 2–3 hours for transport, the tour and return. Because of its uphill location and fixed tour times, a taxi is usually the most practical option during a cruise call.

Take a Moselle Boat Trip

Local sightseeing boats offer another view of Cochem, its vineyards and castle. Short cruises can fit a longer port call, while trips toward villages such as Beilstein require more careful planning. Use only a departure that leaves ample time to return before your ship’s all-aboard time.

Old Town and Castle View Route

1. Cond river berth: Walk along the river toward the main Moselle bridge.
2. Moselle bridge: Cross for the classic view of the waterfront and Reichsburg Castle.
3. Endertplatz and Enderttor: Enter the historic quarter through one of the surviving town gates.
4. Marktplatz: See the town hall, St Martin’s Fountain and surrounding half-timbered buildings.
5. St Martin’s Church: Continue through the lanes toward the riverfront church.
6. Moselle promenade: Follow the waterfront beneath the castle.
7. Martinstor: Climb through the upper lanes for closer castle views. Continue toward the castle only if time and mobility permit.
8. Return: Descend to the promenade, cross the same bridge and follow the river back to the ship.

Passengers wanting to tour the castle should add at least 1.5–2 hours and check admission arrangements before beginning the climb.

Practical Tips

• Wear shoes suitable for cobbles and steep paved paths.
• The Old Town is compact, but the castle and hillside viewpoints are not suitable for passengers who have difficulty with sustained slopes.
• Seasonal attractions, boats and the castle shuttle may operate on reduced schedules outside the main visitor season.
• Allow extra time when several river ships are docked together or when returning from an attraction with a fixed tour schedule.
• Be back at the berth before the ship’s stated all-aboard time; river cruise schedules can change because of locks, water levels and navigation conditions.
