The main limitation is terrain: several important sights, especially San Ciriaco Cathedral, stand above the harbor on steep streets and stairways.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Cruise berths can vary, including facilities around Molo Santa Maria and the cruise terminal at Banchina 15. Follow the marked passenger route and port staff directions because access through operational areas may change.

• On foot: The lower historic center is generally about 1–2 km (0.6–1.2 mi) from the cruise berth, depending on the ship's position and passenger exit.
• Port shuttle: Line 20 is a free internal port connection, but it primarily links boarding areas with the ferry check-in terminal. It should not be assumed to be a city sightseeing shuttle.
• Public transport: Urban buses connect the center with Passetto and other districts. Buy and validate a ticket as required, and check the current timetable locally.
• Taxis: Useful for Passetto, Portonovo, passengers with limited mobility, or calls too short for public-transport connections.

Explore Ancona’s Old Port and Historic Center

Allow 2–3 hours. Begin around the Old Port and Arch of Trajan, then continue into the center for Piazza del Plebiscito, the Church of Santa Maria della Piazza and the pedestrian shopping streets. This is the easiest independent option, although some streets beyond the lower center slope uphill.

Climb to San Ciriaco Cathedral

Allow 2.5–4 hours with the lower city. The cathedral occupies the summit of Guasco Hill and overlooks the harbor. It is close in direct distance but reached by steep lanes, slopes and steps. Walking is suitable for reasonably fit visitors; a taxi is the more comfortable choice for reduced mobility.

Continue to Passetto

Allow 3–4 hours from the city center. Passetto has a clifftop war memorial, Adriatic views and a monumental staircase descending toward the shore and fishermen’s caves. The most practical approach is an urban bus from central Ancona, returning the same way. Walking from the center is possible but adds several kilometers and the descent to the water involves many steps.

Visit Portonovo and the Conero Coast

Allow at least 4–5 hours. Portonovo Bay lies roughly 15 km (9.3 mi) south of central Ancona and combines beaches, wooded slopes and coastal scenery. Seasonal buses operate, but connections and the final descent to the bay require advance timetable checking. A taxi, private transfer or organized excursion is safer for a fixed cruise schedule.

Take an Excursion to Frasassi Caves

Allow 5–6 hours. The caves are approximately 56 km (34.8 mi) inland. Although regional trains serve Genga-San Vittore, the journey also involves reaching Ancona station, coordinating local transfers and joining a timed cave visit. An organized excursion is recommended because missed connections could significantly delay the return.

Walk uphill first while energy and time are plentiful, then descend through the center. Passengers who find the climb difficult can take a taxi uphill and complete the route mainly downhill.

• Wear shoes suitable for cobbles, slopes and stairs.
• Check church and museum opening periods before relying on an interior visit; midday closures can affect a short call.
• Passetto’s shore is reached by a long staircase. Remaining at the clifftop viewpoint is the easier option.
• For Portonovo, Loreto or Frasassi, verify the return journey before leaving Ancona and avoid tight public-transport connections.
• Allow at least 45–60 minutes between returning to the port area and the ship’s all-aboard time. Increase this margin for coastal excursions, trains or seasonal buses.
