Astypalea Port (locode GRJTY) is the principal seaport/main harbor of the Astypalaia Island, located on the island's eastern coast. Astypalaia is one of the Dodecanese islands of Greece in the Aegean Sea (Eastern Mediterranean). The archipelago comprises 15 large plus 150 smaller islands.
Ro-Pax ships of BLUE STAR FERRIES provide regularly scheduled ferry links connecting mainland Greece (Piraeus-Athens) with the islands Kalymnos-Kos-Rhodes-Ikaria-Fournoi Korseon (archipelago)-Astypalaia-Patmos-Leipsoi/Lipsi-Leros-Nisyros-Tilos-Symi-Karpathos-Kasos-Kastellorizo. Another route interlinks Piraeus with the islands Syros-Paros-Naxos-Santorini-Irakleia-Schoinoussa-Koufonisia-Donousa-Amorgos- Astypalaia.
Astypalaia has a land area of ~97 km2/38 mi2 (18x13 km/11x8 mi length and width) and a population of under 2,000. The municipality (114 km2/44 mi2) also includes 16 uninhabited islets (the largest are Syrna and Ofidoussa) and is part of the Kalymnos unit of Greece's South Aegean region. Kalymnos (fka Dodecanese Prefecture) includes the islands of Kalymnos, Agathonisi, Astypalaia, Leipsoi, Leros, and Patmos, plus several smaller islands.
During its recent history, the island belonged to the Byzantine Empire (Middle Ages), the Ottoman Empire (1522-1912), for two brief periods was under the rule of the Venetian Republic/La Serenissima (1648-68, and 1821-28), and was also part of Italy (1912-47).
In 2023, a deal was reached with the Volkswagen Group to turn Astypalaia into a "showcase island for climate-neutral transportation." Significant funding from the EU will support replacing all conventional vehicles on the island with electric alternatives, as well as implementing ride-sharing and on-demand transport services. The project also includes plans to build a 3.5 MW solar power plant equipped with battery storage.
