Astypalaia is a small, hilly island where the most rewarding sights cluster around Pera Gialos and Chora. Cruise calls are generally suited to independent exploration if passengers land at Pera Gialos, while island beaches and remote coves require transport or a pre-arranged excursion.

Independent sightseeing with some planning or transport. Chora is easy to explore without a guide, but its steep lanes and steps can be tiring in hot weather. Transport is advisable for beaches beyond the immediate port area.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Small cruise ships normally anchor offshore and use tenders, with Pera Gialos—the old harbor beneath Chora—the most practical landing point. Exact arrangements can vary by ship and weather, so check the ship's daily information before going ashore.

Pera Gialos has a small waterfront, beach, tavernas and access to Chora. The climb to the windmills usually takes about 15–20 minutes, followed by another steep ascent through narrow lanes to the hilltop castle.

Agios Andreas, approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) from Chora, is the island's principal ferry port. If tenders or transfers use this harbor instead, walking to the main sights is impractical; use the cruise transfer, a taxi or locally available transport.

Seasonal public buses connect Pera Gialos, Chora, Livadi and settlements farther east. AstyBUS also operates as an app-based, on-demand electric shuttle, but availability and service areas should be checked on the day. Taxis are limited, so arrange the return journey before visiting a distant beach.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Explore Chora, the Windmills and Castle

Allow 2–3 hours. Walk uphill from Pera Gialos through whitewashed lanes to the row of eight windmills, then continue to the Venetian Querini Castle. Inside the fortified settlement are the churches of Agios Georgios and Evangelistria, along with broad views over both sides of the island.

This is the best independent choice for a short call. The route is steep, with cobbles, steps and little shade, so supportive footwear and water are important.

Combine Chora with a Local Swim

Allow 3–4 hours. After visiting Chora, return to Pera Gialos Beach for the simplest swim close to the landing point. The waterfront also has places for refreshments, making this a low-risk option when time ashore is limited.

Livadi offers a longer beach with tavernas and views back toward Chora. It is best reached by bus, AstyBUS or taxi because the road crosses the hill and the return walk is uphill. Confirm return transport before settling at the beach.

Take an Island Beach Tour

Allow about 4–5 hours. With a taxi, rental vehicle or organized excursion, passengers can visit beaches such as Steno, Maltezana or Agios Konstantinos. More remote choices such as Vatses and Kaminakia involve rough or unpaved road sections and are better suited to a guided excursion or suitable vehicle.

Do not try to combine several remote beaches with extensive sightseeing in Chora unless the port call is long and transport has been arranged in advance.

Join a Boat Trip to the Offshore Islets

Seasonal boats from Pera Gialos visit swimming locations around Koutsomitis and Kounoupes, including the distinctive double-sided beach at Kounoupes. These trips commonly occupy much of the day and operate to fixed schedules.

Only choose a boat trip whose confirmed return leaves a generous margin before the ship's all-aboard time. A regular local excursion may not wait for tender delays or changes to the cruise schedule.

Self-Guided Chora Walking Tour

Route: Pera Gialos waterfront → Archaeological Museum area → hillside lanes → windmills and central square → Querini Castle → Agios Georgios and Evangelistria churches → return through Chora to Pera Gialos.

Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi) round trip. Pure walking time: about 50–70 minutes. Recommended total time: 2–2.5 hours.

1. Pera Gialos waterfront: Begin beside the old harbor and look uphill toward the castle-topped settlement.
2. Archaeological Museum area: Pass the small museum near the lower town; enter only if it is open and time permits.
3. Chora lanes: Follow the uphill streets through the whitewashed residential quarter.
4. Windmills: Reach the row of traditional windmills beside Chora's central square.
5. Castle approach: Continue through increasingly narrow and steep lanes toward the summit.
6. Querini Castle: Explore the surviving walls, churches and viewpoints, taking care on uneven surfaces.
7. Return: Descend to the windmills and follow the lanes back to Pera Gialos, allowing time for a waterfront break or swim.

Difficulty: Moderate. The distance is short, but the sustained climb, steps, cobbles and summer heat make it unsuitable for some passengers with limited mobility. There is no need to rush directly uphill; pauses at the windmills and viewpoints make the ascent easier.

Practical Tips

• Carry water and sun protection; shade is limited on the climb to the castle.
• Wear shoes with grip rather than beach footwear on the steep, uneven lanes.
• Check seasonal bus times locally instead of relying on an older online timetable.
• Arrange both outbound and return transport before visiting a remote beach.

• Allow at least 45–60 minutes between returning to the landing area and the ship's stated final tender, with a larger margin after independent trips beyond Chora.
