Capri Island (Italy)

Capri is a tender port: cruise ships normally anchor offshore and passengers land at Marina Grande. The island is compact but steep, and buses, taxis and the funicular can develop long queues. Independent sightseeing is practical with some planning; organized transport is preferable when tender time is short or when combining several parts of the island.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Tenders arrive at Marina Grande, beside the island’s principal transport hub. From here, the funicular climbs directly to Capri Town and exits close to the Piazzetta. Local buses also serve Capri Town and Anacapri, while taxis are useful for small groups or passengers wishing to avoid standing in crowded bus queues.

The funicular journey is short, but queues can be substantial when cruise tenders and mainland ferries arrive together. Tickets are sold near the port. Walking uphill from Marina Grande to Capri Town is possible, but the sustained climb makes it a poor use of limited shore time for most passengers.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Capri Town and the Gardens of Augustus

Recommended time: 2–3 hours after reaching Capri Town.

This is the easiest independent option. Begin at the Piazzetta, explore the pedestrian lanes around Via Camerelle, and continue to the Gardens of Augustus for views over the Faraglioni sea stacks, Marina Piccola and the bends of Via Krupp. Via Krupp may close because of rockfall risk, so treat the garden viewpoint as the destination unless its current status is confirmed locally.

Anacapri and Monte Solaro

Recommended time: 3–4 hours, including transport.

Take a direct bus or taxi from Marina Grande, or travel via Capri Town. Anacapri is quieter and less concentrated than Capri Town. From Piazza Vittoria, the single-seat chairlift reaches Monte Solaro in about 12–13 minutes and provides extensive island views. Villa San Michele is approximately five minutes on foot from Piazza Vittoria.

This option is practical independently, but bus capacity is limited and queues can consume considerable time. On a short call, choose either Monte Solaro or Villa San Michele rather than rushing through both.

Boat Trip Around Capri

Recommended time: Approximately 1–2 hours, depending on the itinerary and sea conditions.

Boat trips depart from Marina Grande and offer close views of Capri’s cliffs, caves and Faraglioni without requiring steep walking. This is particularly practical for passengers who want coastal scenery and an easy return to the tender area. Confirm the actual duration and return time before boarding.

Blue Grotto

Recommended time: Allow at least half a day because waiting times are unpredictable.

The grotto can be reached by boat from Marina Grande or by road through Anacapri, followed by a transfer into small rowing boats. Entry depends entirely on sea and wind conditions and may be suspended without notice. Queues at the entrance can be long, so this should not be combined with an ambitious island itinerary. A ship-organized excursion provides more logistical reassurance, although access still cannot be guaranteed.

Self-Guided Walking Tours

Easy Capri Town Viewpoints Walk

Route: Funicular upper station – Piazzetta – Via Camerelle – Gardens of Augustus – Certosa di San Giacomo – Piazzetta.

• Distance: Approximately 2 km (1.2 mi).
• Pure walking time: About 35–45 minutes.
• Total recommended time: 1.5–2.5 hours.
• Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with paved pedestrian lanes, gentle slopes and occasional steps.

1. Leave the funicular beside the Piazzetta and briefly explore the square.
2. Follow Via Vittorio Emanuele into the pedestrian center.
3. Continue along Via Camerelle, Capri’s principal shopping street.
4. Turn toward the Gardens of Augustus for the Faraglioni and Marina Piccola viewpoints.
5. Visit the nearby Certosa di San Giacomo if time and opening arrangements permit.
6. Return through the center to the funicular, bus stop or taxi rank.

Allow extra time for the descent to Marina Grande. If the funicular queue is long, consider a taxi rather than waiting until close to the final tender deadline.

Moderate Walk to Belvedere Tragara

Route: Piazzetta – Via Camerelle – Via Tragara – Belvedere Tragara – Gardens of Augustus – Piazzetta.

• Distance: Approximately 3.5 km (2.2 mi).
• Pure walking time: About 60–75 minutes.
• Total recommended time: 2.5–3 hours.
• Difficulty: Moderate, with slopes, some steps and little shade in places.

Belvedere Tragara provides a close elevated view of the Faraglioni. Return along Via Tragara and cross the town center to the Gardens of Augustus. This route is more manageable during a cruise call than the full Pizzolungo circuit.

Pizzolungo Coastal Walk

Recommended time: 3–4 hours from Capri Town.

The longer Pizzolungo route links the Natural Arch, Grotta di Matermania, coastal viewpoints and Belvedere Tragara. It includes many steps, prolonged climbs and exposed sections. It is suitable only for fit passengers with sufficient time, sturdy footwear and favorable weather. Do not attempt it late in the call.

Beaches and Swimming

Marina Grande has a pebble beach close to the tender landing, making it the simplest choice for a short swim. Marina Piccola has attractive views toward the Faraglioni but requires a bus, taxi or a steep walk from Capri Town. Beach areas are generally pebbled or rocky rather than sandy, and space can be limited during summer.

Practical Tips

• Follow the ship’s stated final tender time rather than relying on public ferry information.
• Build a generous return margin because local buses and the funicular can have long queues.
• Do not depend on the Blue Grotto being open; have a Capri Town or Anacapri alternative.
• Wear shoes suitable for polished paving, slopes and steps.
• Choose one main area on a short call. Capri Town, Anacapri and the Blue Grotto are rarely a comfortable combination.
• Passengers with limited mobility should check tender boarding requirements with the cruise line and favor taxis or a boat trip from Marina Grande.
