Detroit MI (port locode USDET ), aka Motor City, is the USA's 7th largest city and a major port on the Detroit River. It is located on a navigable waterway that links the Great Lakes with Saint Lawrence Seaway.
The city is also the world's foremost car-manufacturing center. The economic growth was aided by city's transport links to the USA's interior and its strategic location on the Detroit River - the waterway connecting the USA's upper and lower Great Lakes.
On the Detroit riverfront is located the Civic Center, with Cobo Hall, City-County Building and Arena (one of the largest convention halls in the US). Here also is the Henry and Edsel Ford Auditorium and Museum. Ford Museum's collection includes antique and classic cars including the automobile in which JFK was shot, railway locomotives, farm equipment, kitchen appliances, car advertising posters, early car videos. Greenfield Village is adjacent to the museum. It takes tourists back 150 years to reveal the genius of remarkable Americans. Actual structures like Thomas Edison's Menlo Park laboratory, Orville and Wilbur Wright's home and bicycle shop, have been moved to Greenfield. The village also features a paddleboat on the small lake and an operating steam railway.
Also north of downtown are the General Motors and Fisher buildings, designed by the German architect Albert Kahn. Pewabic Pottery (1907) is another place of interest, built for ceramicist Mary Chase Perry Stratton. Her glazed tiles were an important element in buildings of 1920s. West of Detroit's downtown area is situated Fort Wayne Military Museum, the Midwest's best-preserved pre-American Civil War fort. It houses Great Lakes Indian Museum and Tuskegee Airmen Museum.
The post-COVID 2022 was the most successful year ever for cruises on the Great Lakes. The season featured ~150,000 cruise ship tourists (+25% over 2019) served by 9x boats. Currently, the largest by capacity Great Lakes cruise companies are Viking Cruises USA (Viking Octantis), AQV-American Queen Voyages (ships Ocean Navigator, Ocean Voyager), Pearl Seas Cruises (Pearl Mist), and the Canadian company St Lawrence Cruise Lines (Canadian Empress). Other travel brands that offer Great Lakes voyages are PONANT and Tauck (fleet).
Due to the increased Great Lakes cruise passenger traffic, in 2022 were opened two new US Customs and Border Protection facilities - in Duluth MI and Cleveland OH, in addition to the existing in Detroit MI and Sault Ste Marie MI.
In 2022, Detroit Port Authority reported a successful season with a total of 52 cruise ship calls/handled berthings.
Detroit offers a practical mix of waterfront walks, downtown architecture and museums. Easy independently from a downtown berth; independent with some planning or transport from an outlying berth. Confirm your docking location before deciding how to spend the call.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Cruise ships normally dock rather than tender. The Carl M. Levin Public Dock and Terminal stands between Hart Plaza and the Renaissance Center, beside the RiverWalk. Once passengers are cleared to leave, central sights are accessible on foot. Campus Martius Park is approximately 15–20 minutes away.
Other downtown berths are used, including the waterfront at Huntington Place. These also allow practical downtown sightseeing, although the walking route starts farther west. Nicholson Terminal, an industrial facility southwest of downtown, has accommodated cruise ships too. If assigned there, arrange transport through the cruise line or confirm an authorized taxi pickup point; do not assume you can walk directly through the terminal.
Shuttle provision depends on the cruise line and berth. Confirm the drop-off, last return and pickup location aboard. Downtown taxis and rideshare services are useful for museums farther afield. The QLINE streetcar runs along Woodward Avenue toward Midtown, while the People Mover serves a downtown loop.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Downtown landmarks and architecture
Allow 2–3 hours; easy independently from downtown. Combine Hart Plaza, the Monument to Joe Louis, the Spirit of Detroit, the Guardian Building and Campus Martius Park. This is the most flexible choice for a short call, with cafés and lunch options along the way. The streets are mostly level, but wide road crossings require attention. Visit the Guardian Building’s decorative lobby when public access is available.
RiverWalk and waterfront parks
Allow 1–3 hours; easy independently. Walk east from the downtown terminal past the Renaissance Center waterfront toward Cullen Plaza and, for a longer outing, Milliken State Park’s harbor and lighthouse. Enjoy river views toward Windsor and watch passing commercial vessels. The paved promenade is mostly flat, but exposed to sun and wind. Turn back whenever your remaining time requires; there is no need to walk the entire waterfront.
Detroit Institute of Arts
Allow 3–4 hours including transport; independent with planning. The DIA in Midtown is a good choice for art enthusiasts or poor weather. Prioritize Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals, then choose a few galleries rather than attempting the whole collection. Take a taxi or rideshare, or use the QLINE along Woodward Avenue to Ferry Street and walk to the museum. Include waiting time in your return plan. The museum normally closes on Mondays, and gallery access can change.
The Henry Ford in Dearborn
Allow approximately 4–6 hours including transfers; organized excursion or prearranged transport recommended. The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is in Dearborn, separate from downtown Detroit. Road transfers commonly take around 25–40 minutes each way, with longer journeys possible in traffic. Spend 2–3 hours on selected vehicle, transport and industrial exhibits.
Greenfield Village and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour are separate experiences with their own admission and operating arrangements. Choose one main venue for a typical port call. Greenfield Village involves substantial outdoor walking and seasonal opening; combining several venues is better reserved for a long call.
Self-Guided Walking Tour
Downtown loop from the Levin terminal
Approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi), with 40–50 minutes of pure walking; allow 2–3 hours with stops. Easy overall, on mostly flat sidewalks and paved waterfront paths. Hart Plaza has steps and changes of level, so choose ramped approaches where needed.
- Terminal exit and RiverWalk: Start after passenger clearance and walk west toward Hart Plaza.
- Hart Plaza: Explore the riverfront square and pause for views across to Canada.
- Monument to Joe Louis: Continue toward Jefferson Avenue to see the suspended fist sculpture.
- Spirit of Detroit: Use the marked crossings to reach the statue beside the municipal building.
- Guardian Building: Walk to Griswold Street for the exterior and, when accessible, the tiled lobby.
- Campus Martius Park: Continue north for a break, café stop or lunch nearby.
- Woodward Avenue and waterfront return: Head south to Jefferson Avenue, cross at the signals and return through Hart Plaza to the terminal.
From a Huntington Place berth, join the route at Hart Plaza and add the waterfront walk back to your ship. From a shuttle drop-off, adapt the loop to finish at the confirmed pickup point. Festivals and major events may require detours.
Practical Tips
- Confirm the berth and all-aboard time: A downtown walking plan does not automatically apply to an industrial terminal.
- Leave a return margin: Aim to reach a downtown berth at least 45–60 minutes before all-aboard. For Dearborn or other road trips, add extra traffic and pickup allowance.
- Check museum availability: Motown Museum’s Hitsville U.S.A. guided tours are paused during construction, with reopening planned for spring 2027. Confirm that tours have resumed before arranging a visit.
- Expect event disruption: Riverfront festivals, sporting events and the Detroit Grand Prix can affect sidewalks, road access and transport.
- Keep the call on the US side: Windsor is visible across the river, but visiting involves an international border crossing and potentially unpredictable delays.
- Prepare for waterfront weather: Bring comfortable shoes, sun protection and a light layer; shade is limited on parts of the RiverWalk.
