Eden is a port town located on the Sapphire Coast / southern coast of NSW (New South Wales, Australia). The port is approx 480 km (300 mi) south of the state's capital Sydney. This is also NSW's southernmost town (population around 3,000), located between Nullica and Calle Calle Bay. It was built on undulating land that is adjacent to the 3rd-deepest natural harbour in the southern hemisphere, and Snug Cove on the western boundary.
The eastern coastline of Eden has rugged cliffs at its southern end and a vast, sandy surf beach, north of the cliffs (Aslings Beach). The end of the beach is at the entrance to Lake Curalo, Twofold Bay's safe boating inlet. Eden's urban settlement commenced in 1843, but was officially proclaimed as township on March 20, 1885. The main industries in the town include forestry, fishing and tourism.
Port Eden (locode AUQDN) is one of the two regional seaports in NSW administered by New South Wales Maritime Authority; the other one being Yamba (on the north coast). Eden NSW is the state's biggest fishing port and its major export is woodchips. The port is shared with Department of Defence which owns and manages a large naval wharf servicing Australian warships. In the period 1850s-1950s, the port was serviced by Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. The list of local tourist attractions includes Killer Whale Museum, oyster farms, boutique shopping.
During season 2017-2018, the cruise port handled 15 ship calls and ~23,000 passengers. For season 2018-2019, the number of scheduled/booked ships increased to 21. The list of newcomers included the liners Norwegian Jewel (NCL-Norwegian), Silver Shadow (Silversea) and Seven Seas Voyager (RSSC-Regent). In August 2019, the port inaugurated the extended Breakwater Wharf. The cruise terminal offers full customs clearance, which allows Eden to be visited as vessel's first Australian call port.
Following the 2+ year pause in cruise shipping due to the Coronavirus crisis, in 2022 the Port had scheduled 44 ship calls (booked berthings). The 2020's last visit was on March 10th, the 2022's first visit was on July 12th.
Eden cruise terminal
Large cruise ships to Eden NSW anchor st sea (in the sheltered Twofold Bay) and their passengers are transported/ferried to port's wharf via ship's tender boats (approx 5-min travel time). The tender docking facility (Eden Breakwater Wharf) is located very close/at walking distance from downtown. Cafe restaurants at the wharf offer fresh-caught seafood.
Small-sized cruise ships and megayachts dock directly at Eden Breakwater Wharf in the harbor (shown on the above photo). In 2019 was completed wharf's extension that now allows docking of larger-sized liners. The first vessel with booked berthing at the new wharf was Pacific Explorer (fka Dawn Princess) on September 15, 2019. This port development project was budgeted AUD 44 million ($32M from NSW's Government, $10M from Australia's Government, $2 million from Bega Valley Shire Council).
