Emden is an Ems River/North Sea cruise port and city in Germany's Lower Saxony state (Urban district) with population around 50,000. The city is located on Ems River (close to North Sea). Regularly scheduled ferries link to Borkum Island (Germany's East Frisian Islands/Ostfriesische Inseln).

The city's economy is heavily based on automobile production and shipbuilding. Here, Volkswagen Group has a large plant (with around 10,000 employees) produsing the Passat models. The shipyard Nordseewerke Emden GmbH (subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp) employs around 1400 workers. The shipyard specializes in building submarines, also various types of cargo carriers, special-purpose ships (including icebreakers) and shiprepairs.

The city also enjoys well-developed tourism as a shortbreak (day-trip) destination for German tourists on the North Sea coast. Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences, opened in 1973) has enrolled over 4000 students.

Port Emden

Port Emden (locode DEEME) is a deepwater seaport located at the mouth of the river flowing into North Sea. Port operator is the Oldenburg-based Niedersachsen Ports GmbH (translated "Lower Saxony Ports") - Germany's largest operator of public seaports.

The port is approx 70 km upstream from the city, on river's estuary, and consists of two parts - Outer Port (tidal deepwater harbour) and Inland Port (non-tidal harbour accessible via sea locks). Outer Port serves mainly Ro-Ro ships (car carriers). Railway links directly the Ro-Ro ramps. Inland Port is ranked Germany's largest non-tidal harbour and is accessed via two sea locks (seeschleuse). The large lock has around 3,3 km long quayside with facilities, almost all of which are rail-linked. As storage facilities, Port Emden has over 100,000 m2 warehouse (enclosed storage) space and 900,000 m2 open-air storage.

The seaport has annual turnover ~6,3 million cargo tons, with major transhipments being cars, forestry products, wind turbines (for German Bight offshore wind farms). Emden is ranked Europe's 3rd largest car export port (after Zeebrugge and Bremerhaven) and is homeport for Volkswagen Group (serving company's new vehicles distribution). In 2017, the port handled 1,92 million vehicles (compared to 1,407 M in 2015).

As cruise port, Emden is not so popular but is surely one of the best-known stops for Meyer Werft-built new cruise liners during their conveyance for sea trials from the Papenburg Shipyard to North Sea. Also from or via Emden in Papenburg arrive all pre-fabricated hull- and superstructure blocks and modules used for the vessels' construction (drydock assembly).

Next is listed AIDAnova ship's Ems River conveyance schedule (2018) that shows cruising times along the route.

As regular river cruise port, Emden is included in MS Sans Souci boat's 7-day itinerary from Bremen to Amsterdam, that visits Elsfleth, Oldenburg, Kampe, Dorpen, Papenburg, Leer, Emden, Delfzijl, Groningen, Sneek, Leeuwarden, Hoorn, Amsterdam (debarkation).

Emden suits a relaxed call combining the old harbor, a compact town-center walk and one museum or boat trip. Easy independently from a central berth; independent with some planning from other port locations. Confirm your ship’s berth before deciding how to reach the sights.

Getting from the Ship to Town

River-cruise berths include the Alter Binnenhafen, close to the central waterfront, and EVAG Terminal II in the inland harbor. These are alongside berths rather than tender landings. From the Alter Binnenhafen, the Delft waterfront and central sights are a short walk away. EVAG Terminal II is described as approximately 10 minutes on foot from the center, but follow the passenger exit and walking directions provided onboard.

Emden also has extensive commercial docks and an outer harbor. Do not assume that a ship shown on the port map is beside the sightseeing area. If your vessel uses another berth, confirm pedestrian access and any transfer arrangements; a taxi or arranged transfer may be more practical. Shuttle provision depends on the individual call.

Once you reach the Ratsdelft waterfront, the main central attractions can be explored on foot without public transport.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore the Delft Waterfront and Town Center

Allow 1.5–3 hours. Easy independently. Walk around the Ratsdelft to see the museum ships, the town hall and the pedestrian shopping streets. The waterfront vessels include the Amrumbank lightship, the Georg Breusing rescue cruiser and the Stadt Emden herring logger. They can be appreciated from the promenade; boarding depends on individual opening arrangements.

Dat Otto Huus, devoted to German comedian Otto Waalkes, stands beside the Delft. It is most rewarding for visitors familiar with his work. A café stop or an East Frisian tea break fits comfortably into this outing.

Choose One Museum

Allow 1–2 hours inside, plus walking time. Easy independently. The Kunsthalle Emden is the main choice for modern and contemporary art. The Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum, housed in the town hall beside the Ratsdelft, focuses on regional art and history and fits particularly well into a waterfront walk.

Choose one for a short call rather than trying to cover both. Check opening days before setting out; the Kunsthalle normally closes on Mondays. Museum ships may involve steep steps and confined interiors.

Take a Harbor Boat Trip

Allow around 1.5–2 hours overall. Independent with advance planning. Seasonal harbor trips leave from the Ratsdelft and last approximately 75 minutes. They provide a seated introduction to Emden’s working docks, shipyards and lock areas, complementing the smaller-scale waterfront seen on foot.

Check the operating calendar and reserve ahead when possible. Choose a departure that leaves ample time afterward to return to your berth; do not rely on the final available sailing.

Visit Greetsiel or Explore the Krummhörn

Allow 3–4 hours for Greetsiel alone, or around 5 hours for a wider countryside tour. Transport required. Greetsiel offers a fishing harbor, traditional brick houses, twin windmills and cafés. It is approximately 22 km (13.7 mi) from central Emden, with a direct drive taking roughly 30–40 minutes each way, depending on traffic and your berth.

A prebooked taxi with an agreed return pickup makes an independent visit practical. Public buses require checking both outward and return timetables and are less flexible during a short call. For a route combining Greetsiel with villages such as Rysum and the coastal lighthouse areas, an organized excursion is preferable because the stops are spread out.

Self-Guided Walking Route

Central Emden: Waterfront, Culture and Canals

Start and finish: Ratsdelft waterfront beside the town hall. Reach this point first from your actual berth or transfer drop-off.

Approximate distance: 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: 35–45 minutes. Recommended total: 2–3 hours with short stops, longer if entering a major museum. Difficulty: Easy, mostly level streets and promenades, with some uneven paving and road crossings.

  1. Ratsdelft and town hall: Start with the harbor views and the exterior of the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum.
  2. Georg-Breusing-Promenade: Walk beside the museum ships for a closer look from the quay.
  3. Johannes a Lasco Library: Continue to the library within the remains of the former Great Church. Enter only if visitor access is available.
  4. Dat Otto Huus: Return toward the head of the Delft and the beginning of the pedestrian shopping area.
  5. Große Straße: Follow the central shopping streets toward the Kunsthalle.
  6. Kunsthalle Emden: Visit the galleries if time permits, or pause by the nearby water before returning through the center to the Ratsdelft.

For a shorter outing, finish after Dat Otto Huus. On returning to the Ratsdelft, allow separately for the walk or transfer back to your ship; this route does not include access through a commercial terminal.

Green Spaces and Coastal Trips

The historic Wallanlagen, a belt of former ramparts with trees and waterways around the center, provide a quieter walking alternative. Add a short section near the Kunsthalle if you have spare time. Paths can be damp or uneven, and the raised earthworks introduce gentle slopes.

Emden’s central waterfront is a harbor setting rather than a seaside bathing beach. Borkum has sandy beaches, but reaching it involves a separate ferry journey: approximately 130 minutes each way by conventional ferry or around 60 minutes by catamaran, followed by the island railway. With terminal transfers, check-in and fixed return sailings, it is generally unsuitable for a short cruise call. Consider it only during a long stay with carefully checked connections.

Practical Tips for Your Call

  • Confirm the berth and passenger exit: The old harbor, inland terminals and outer harbor require different plans.
  • Keep the plan compact: A waterfront walk plus one museum or harbor trip is a realistic combination for a shorter visit.
  • Check opening days: Museums, museum ships and boat trips do not all operate daily or year-round.
  • Prepare for wind and showers: Carry a waterproof layer, especially for waterfront walks and boat trips.
  • Leave a return margin: Aim to reach the ship at least 30 minutes before the stated all-aboard time when exploring locally. Allow more for taxis, countryside excursions or any terminal transfer, and follow the cruise line’s instructions.
