MS Rhein Prinzessin Review

Review of MS Rhein Prinzessin

MS Rhein Prinzessin cruises on waterways in Holland and Belgium, as well as on the rivers Rhine, Main, Mosel and Saar. Departures are offered from Germany (Dusseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Passau). The riverboat is owned by the Basel-based Princess Rivercruises AG and chartered by the German travel company Phoenix Reisen (established in 1973). Phoenix Reisen is a travel agency operating in the ocean ship charter business (since 1988) and river cruise shipping (since 1993).

The cruise ship was reconstructed and extensively refurbished in 2009 before entering service for Phoenix Reisen.

Cabins

MS Rhein Prinzessin has a total of 73 cabins. All staterooms are outside and feature either a porthole window (small, non-opening, located near the ceiling on Neptune Deck), a large non-opening window (Saturn Deck), or a French Balcony (floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door opening to a false balcony on Orion Deck).

All cabins include two separate beds (daily sofa / Pullman bed), wall-mounted lamps, individually controlled air conditioning, en-suite bathroom (washbasin, WC, shower, hairdryer), flat-screen TV (satellite channels, ship information channel, real-time bow camera views), telephone (onboard calls only – Reception Desk, passenger cabins), alarm clock radio, daily newspaper, wardrobe, electronic safe (in the closet), several 220V power sockets, and a small wall-mounted dining table by the window.

Twin-Plus cabins (on Saturn Deck) are positioned half a deck higher than the other staterooms. All cabins are equal in size (15 m² / 160 ft²) and offered in the following categories:

  • Twin Outside (category A, Neptune Deck, aft) – some noise from the engines may be noticeable
  • Twin Outside (category B, Neptune Deck)
  • Twin Outside (category C, Saturn Deck, forward) – some noise from the bow thruster may occur, but only during docking maneuvers and river lock passages
  • Twin Outside (category D, Saturn Deck)
  • Twin-Plus Outside (category E, Saturn Deck)
  • Twin Comfort Outside with French Balcony (category F, Orion Deck)
  • Twin Outside Single Cabin (category G, Saturn Deck)
  • Twin Comfort Outside with French Balcony (category H1, Orion Deck) – twin cabins available for single occupancy

Shipboard facilities

MS Rhein Prinzessin has four passenger decks, a Panorama Restaurant, an elegant Panorama Lounge with Bar, Captain's Club, and a foyer/lobby area with two ship entrances (port and starboard), a Tour Office (itinerary information, shore excursion bookings), and a Reception Desk (24-hour guest services, assistance, purser). Additional facilities include a Boutique Shop (souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, toiletries, sweets), and a Library (reading lounge with books, DVDs, puzzles, and board games).

The boat features a wellness area with a Spa (treatment room for massages), Sauna Room (with whirlpool), showers, and a Fitness Room (gym). The Sun Deck is divided into two areas: a midship sunbathing section (with 4 retractable awnings, 4-seat tables, deckchairs, loungers) and a forward lounge (a large retractable roof-covered seating area with tables and chairs).

Onboard entertainment (in the Panorama Lounge) includes themed dance evenings with live music (performed by a resident musician and local folklore artists), crew shows, quizzes, card games, popular board games, language classes, and lectures. Captain's Club is a maritime-themed lounge (accessible from the Panorama Lounge) with comfortable wooden furniture (sofas, round tables, armchairs) and traditional seafaring décor.

Shore excursions are well organized and offered at additional cost in every port of call along the itinerary. Complimentary maps and tour guide explanations are provided at each stop. Laundry service, wireless (WLAN) internet, and onboard connectivity are available at extra cost. The onboard language is German. Smoking is permitted only in the designated area on the Sun Deck. A forward staircase connects all decks, and a forward lift links Saturn and Orion Decks.

Desserts with coffee are served afterward. Dinner main courses must be selected at noon from an à la carte menu. All meals follow common seating times. Special dietary dishes (gluten-free, lactose-free, diabetic, etc.) are available upon request. Dietary requirements, food allergies, and intolerances must be communicated in advance.

Afternoon tea, coffee, and midnight snacks are complimentary. Beers, house wines, soft drinks (mineral water, juices, cola, lemonade), tea, and coffee are offered free of charge daily between 8 am and midnight. Traditional formal events – Captain's Reception and Captain's Dinner – include festive menus and gourmet dishes.

Tipping is not compulsory but recommended (EUR 4–5 per person per day). Onboard purchases and services can be paid in cash or by credit card (VISA, MasterCard) or Girocard (used by all German banks and ATMs).
