Koln/Cologne (port locode DECGN) is a Rhine River cruise port and city in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia state. By population (around 1,09 million), the city is ranked Europe's 31st-largest and Germany's 4th-largest (after Berlin, Hamburg, Munchen). By metro population (around 10,5 million), Cologne is also in Europe's top-10 largest metropolises.
The city spreads on both sides of the Rhine, and is ~80 km (50 mi) from the Germany-Belgium border. Among its most prominent landmarks are the Kolner Dom (13th-century cathedral), the University of Cologne (14th-century/one of Europe's oldest and largest, with more than 48,000 students), and 30+ museums.
On shore excursions/roundtrip bus tours from Cologne can visit Schloss Ehreshoven (14th-century moated castle, originally owned by the Abtei Michaelsberg/11th-century founded Benedictine abbey in Siegburg).
Koln was established by the Romans in the 1st century AD. The city was the capital of the Germania province in the Roman Empire, until its occupation by the Franks in 462. During the Middle Ages, it was among the continent's largest and most important cities. During WW2 (1939-1945), Koln was one of the most severely bombed cities in Germany. The allies' bombing raids reduced the population by 95% and destroyed almost the entire infrastructure.
In early November 2018, PitPoint LNG BV (Holland-based, 2016-founded company, subsidiary of Primagaz Nederland BV) was granted a permit to build a shore-to-ship LNG bunkering station for supplying LNG-powered inland vessels with liquefied natural gas. Construction works started in 2018 and were completed in 2019.
Cologne is one of the easiest Rhine ports to explore independently. Many riverboats berth close to the historic centre, placing Cologne Cathedral, the Old Town and the Rhine promenade within walking distance. However, the city uses several landing stages on both banks, so passengers should confirm the exact berth before planning their route.
At a Glance
- Independent sightseeing: Easy from central berths; some planning or transport may be needed from more distant docks.
- Main sights: Cologne Cathedral, Old Town, Hohenzollern Bridge, Rhine promenade and the Chocolate Museum.
- Best for a short call: Cathedral and Old Town walking circuit.
- Terrain: Mostly level, paved streets and riverside paths. The Cathedral Tower requires a long, narrow stair climb.
Getting from the River-Cruise Berth
Ships commonly use landing stages along Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer on the west bank, north of the Cathedral. Depending on the assigned stage, the Cathedral is approximately 0.5–1.5 km (0.3–0.9 mi) away along a largely level promenade.
Other vessels may dock on the Deutz side of the Rhine or at less central berths. From central Deutz, passengers can walk across Hohenzollern Bridge to the Cathedral and Old Town. More distant locations may require a cruise-line transfer, taxi or local tram. Dock assignments can change, so use the location supplied by the ship rather than assuming that it will berth beside the Old Town.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Cologne Cathedral and the Old Town
Allow 2–3 hours for the city’s essential sights. Visit the Cathedral, then explore the lanes and squares around Alter Markt and Heumarkt before returning along the Rhine promenade. Tourist entry to the Cathedral interior requires a ticket, and visiting periods may be restricted by services or special events.
The Cathedral Tower is an optional addition for passengers comfortable with more than 500 steps, confined stairways and physical exertion. Allow about one hour and check the remaining port time before entering.
Hohenzollern Bridge and the Rhine Panorama
Cross the pedestrian side of Hohenzollern Bridge for broad views back toward the Cathedral and Old Town. Continue to the Rhine Boulevard in Deutz, where stepped terraces provide one of the city’s best skyline viewpoints. This easy independent outing takes approximately 1.5–2 hours from the Cathedral area.
Chocolate Museum and Rheinauhafen
Walk south beside the Rhine from the Old Town to the Chocolate Museum, approximately 1.5 km (0.9 mi) from the Cathedral. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the museum, plus walking time. Advance booking is useful during weekends and busy holiday periods.
If time permits, continue briefly through Rheinauhafen to see the modern waterfront and distinctive crane-shaped buildings. The Cathedral-to-museum route is level and practical independently.
Museums and Roman Cologne
Passengers wanting an indoor visit can choose one central museum rather than attempting several. Museum Ludwig, beside the Cathedral, is convenient for modern art. Archaeological remains around the Cathedral and the historic centre offer an alternative focus, but current access should be checked because exhibitions and archaeological sites may be affected by redevelopment.
Local Food and Kölsch Beer
The Old Town contains traditional brewhouses serving Kölsch beer and regional dishes. A meal can fit into a longer call, but service may take time. Choose a central venue and keep at least 60–90 minutes available for returning to the ship.
Self-Guided Walking Tours
Old Town Highlights Route
Distance: About 3 km (1.9 mi)
Pure walking time: Approximately 45 minutes
Recommended total time: 2–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy; mostly level pavement and cobbled lanes
- Begin at the central river landing stage or walk south along the Rhine from Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer.
- Visit Cologne Cathedral and the surrounding Roncalliplatz.
- Pass Museum Ludwig and descend toward the river.
- Walk through the Old Town around Fischmarkt and the church of Great St Martin.
- Continue through Alter Markt and Heumarkt.
- Return along the Rhine promenade to the ship.
If the vessel is berthed farther north, add the distance between the berth and the Cathedral in both directions.
Cathedral, Bridge and Deutz Panorama Route
Distance: About 4 km (2.5 mi)
Pure walking time: Approximately 55–70 minutes
Recommended total time: 2–2.5 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate; level overall, with bridge approaches and steps near the river
- Start at Cologne Cathedral.
- Walk across Hohenzollern Bridge using the pedestrian path.
- Pause at the Rhine Boulevard for views of the Cathedral skyline.
- Walk south along the Deutz waterfront.
- Cross back via Deutz Bridge.
- Return through Heumarkt and the Old Town to the river berth.
This route can be shortened by returning across Hohenzollern Bridge after visiting the Rhine Boulevard.
Old Town and Chocolate Museum Route
Distance: About 4.5 km (2.8 mi) round trip from the Cathedral
Pure walking time: Approximately 60–75 minutes
Recommended total time: 3–4 hours with a museum visit
Difficulty: Easy; predominantly flat
- Begin at the Cathedral and descend toward the Old Town.
- Pass Fischmarkt, Great St Martin and the riverside promenade.
- Continue south past Heumarkt toward the former harbour.
- Visit the Chocolate Museum.
- See the northern section of Rheinauhafen.
- Retrace the waterfront route or return through the Old Town.
When an Organized Tour Helps
A guided tour is optional rather than necessary for central Cologne. It can add useful context to the Cathedral, Roman remains and Old Town, while an organized transfer may be worthwhile if the ship uses a distant berth. Excursions beyond Cologne, including Brühl’s palaces or destinations farther along the Rhine, require more travel time and are best considered only during a long port call.
Practical Tips
- Confirm the ship’s exact landing stage and all-aboard time before leaving; Cologne does not have one universal river-cruise terminal.
- Allow extra time if another vessel is moored alongside and passengers must cross through it to reach the quay.
- Book timed attractions in advance when possible, but avoid schedules that leave little flexibility for a changed arrival time.
- Trams and buses are useful for distant berths, but most central sightseeing is quicker on foot.
- Expect cobblestones in parts of the Old Town and crowded areas around the Cathedral.
- Keep a return margin of at least 30–45 minutes for a central berth, and longer when using public transport or a ship shuttle.
