Honolulu is Hawaii's largest seaport and the state's capital city located on Oahu Island's southern coast. The city is the USA's westernmost and southernmost, with population around 340,000 (metro over 950,000). It is served by the Honolulu International Airport, which is also the state's principal airport with regularly scheduled both domestic and international flights. The smaller airport Kalaeloa is a commuter airport mainly used by air taxis, general and locally based US military aircraft.

The port (officially "Honolulu Harbor") has a sheltered deepwater harbour waterway and handles over 11 million cargo tons per year, including over 80% of Hawaii's imported goods.

Waikiki Beach is one of the city's neighborhoods and Hawaii's largest tourist district. This beachfront area is lined up with hotels, shops, top-rated nightlife venues, public places (Kapiolani Park, Fort DeRussy Military Reservation, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Lagoon, Kuhio Beach Park). Here is also the Ala Wai Harbor - Hawaii's largest yacht marina.

Honolulu (and Hawaii in general) enjoys rapid economic and tourism growth. The air travel alone brings around 8 million visitors annually. Of those, over 60% enter the islands via Honolulu International Airport. The tourism industry contributes with around USD 10 billion annually. Honolulu is Hawaii's main financial and business center. Here are based Bank of Hawaii, Central Pacific Bank, First Hawaiian Bank.

Honolulu is the turnaround port for the NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line's ship Pride of America.

The following table shows Pride of America's ports of call with arrival/departure times (port stays). This standard 7-night roundtrip Honolulu itinerary includes overnights on Kauai and Maui, and afternoon cruising of the Napali Coast.

IMPORTANT: Effective January 1st, 2026, Hawaii extends its Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) to include cruise ship passengers. Previously applicable only to hotel stays, the 11% TAT will be prorated for the duration cruise ships are docked in Hawaiian ports. For instance, tourists on a 14-night voyage with 3 nights in Hawaiian waters will incur the tax on those specific nights. The legislative change is anticipated to generate ~US$100 million annually, with funds earmarked exclusively for environmental protection and climate resilience projects. These initiatives include beach restoration, infrastructure reinforcement against storms, and the removal of invasive species contributing to wildfire risks.

Port Honolulu's cargo terminal is located on Sand Island. The Terminal's operator is Matson Inc - 1882-founded (as Matson Navigation Company) stock-listed shipping company that provides regularly-scheduled Hawaiian Islands transhipping services. In April 2019, the company received 3x new gantry cranes (weight 1290 tons each). By lifting capacity (65 tons), they are Hawaii's biggest ship-to-shore cranes. The new Japanese container cranes (by Mitsui E&S Group) and other terminal upgrades were part of the company's USD 60 million budget for terminal expansion and modernization.
