Anchorage AK is Alaska's largest port city, located in Southern Alaska, between Turnagain and Knik arms of Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains. To the south is Kenai Peninsula, to the north is Denali National Park (aka Mount McKinley).

Most cruise ship tourists visit Anchorage through Seward or Whittier.

Anchorage AK serves as Alaska's hub for communications, transportation, and finance. The city has a population of around 300,000, ranking it Alaska's largest, containing over 40% of the state's total population. The city was founded in 1914 as the headquarters of the Alaska Railroad (Seward and Whittier) and via Anchorage to Fairbanks (north). With a population of around 32,000 (metro over 100,000), Fairbanks is ranked Alaska's 2nd most populous (after Anchorage).

The local economy is based on tourism and air freight. In 1964 the city was devastated by an earthquake (aka Good Friday earthquake) and much of the downtown area had to be rebuilt. In 1968 was discovered the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field resulting in a boom in construction and oil companies setting up offices in the city.

Anchorage is the cruise port to Fairbanks. The distance between both cities is around 580 km (360 mi). Travel time is 7-8 hours (by car and bus), 12 hours (by train) and 1 hour (by air). Train travel is the longest on Alaska Railroad. Being the most expensive, this is also the best way to enjoy the region's spectacular scenery as there are special glass-domed rail cars. From Anchorage are offered (as shore excursions) plane tours to Fairbanks.

The most popular tourist attractions in Anchorage include Resolution Park, Museum of History and Art, Elderberry Park, Native Heritage Center, Earthquake Park, Eklutna Historical Park, Eagle River Nature Center, Portage Glacier. Also very popular are boat tours (via Seward) to Prince William Sound's glaciers or Kenai Fjords Park. Bus and plane tours are offered to Denali National Park.

Port Anchorage handles around 95% of all goods shipped to Alaska. Cargo ships from the US container shipping companies Horizon Lines and TOTE Maritime arrive twice per week from Port Tacoma (Washington). Along with handling cargoes, the port also serves as a jet fuel storage facility delivered from Alaskan refineries and used by the local US military base JBER (Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson) and TSAIA (Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport).

Cruisetours starting in Anchorage AK often include bus travel to Talkeetna (Chugach Mountains), scenic train travel to Denali NP (Denali Education Center), an overnight stay in the Denali Park, return bus travel to Anchorage via Willow AK (popular for its dogsled- and ATV rides). The Wilderness Express Train links to Talkeetna AK, from where (via bus) is accessed Denali NP.

 

Following the 2-year cruise shipping pause due to the COVID crisis, in 2022 Port Anchorage AK had scheduled only one ship call - by MS Nieuw Amsterdam (on Sept 15) as part of the 14-day "Great Alaskan Explorer" itinerary (roundtrip from Vancouver BC Canada).

Actually, many cruise ships to Anchorage actually dock in Whittier AK (visited on 7-day itineraries from Vancouver) and transport their passengers to Anchorage on bus excursions. Whittier is approx 100 km (60 mi) from Anchorage, accessible by road and train.

At Port Anchorage, passengers can use bus shuttle service (usually complimentary), taxis and rental cars downtown. Shore excursions (by train and bus) also leave from the cruise terminal.

Following the Coronavirus crisis, in 2022 Port Anchorage was visited by just one cruise ship - Holland America Line's ms Nieuw Amsterdam.

At a Glance

Independent with some planning or transport. Cruise ships calling directly at Anchorage use the industrial Don Young Port of Alaska, north of downtown. Walking out of the port is generally impractical, but central Anchorage is compact and easy to explore after transferring there.

Check the itinerary carefully: cruises marketed as “Anchorage” may instead begin or end in Whittier or Seward. Whittier is about 97 km (60.3 mi) from Anchorage, while Seward is about 201 km (124.9 mi) away.

Getting from the Cruise Port

The Port of Alaska is approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) from central Anchorage. It is a working freight port with controlled access, heavy vehicle traffic and no practical sightseeing route into the city.

  • Cruise-line transport: Use the shuttle or transfer specified in the ship’s daily information when provided.
  • Taxi or rideshare: May be useful, but pickup arrangements should be confirmed because access inside the secure port can be restricted.
  • Downtown: The Log Cabin Visitor Information Center at Fourth Avenue and F Street is a convenient starting point for walking, local tours and onward transport.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Downtown and the Anchorage Museum

Allow 3–4 hours. Begin around the Log Cabin Visitor Information Center, see the nearby ceremonial Iditarod start area and Balto statue, then continue to the Anchorage Museum. The museum’s exhibitions on Alaska Native cultures, northern art, history and science make it the strongest indoor choice for a short call. This option is easy independently once downtown.

Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center

Allow approximately 3–4 hours including transport. The center combines indoor exhibits with outdoor cultural sites representing Alaska’s Indigenous peoples. It is outside the downtown core, so use a taxi, rideshare or the center’s seasonal shuttle. Shuttle dates, pickup points and return times should be checked before leaving downtown; seating can be limited.

Walk or Cycle the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail

The paved trail begins near downtown and follows Cook Inlet for 18 km (11.2 mi) to Kincaid Park. A cruise visitor does not need to cover the entire route: the opening section provides inlet and mountain views and can be enjoyed as a 1–2-hour walk. Cycling allows more of the trail to be covered, but rolling terrain and shared trail traffic should be considered.

Take a Scenic Tour Beyond the City

For a longer call, consider a guided drive along Turnagain Arm or a visit to the Glen Alps area of Chugach State Park. These destinations require transport and are more practical on a timed tour. Turnagain Arm outings may include viewpoints around Beluga Point, Girdwood or Portage Valley, while Glen Alps is about a 30-minute drive from downtown.

Self-Guided Downtown Walk

Easy route: approximately 3 km (1.9 mi), about 45 minutes of pure walking or 2–3 hours with stops. Central streets are mostly straightforward, though there are gentle slopes toward the waterfront.

  1. Log Cabin Visitor Information Center: Collect a current city map and confirm the location of the return transfer.
  2. Fourth Avenue: Walk through the historic commercial center and see the ceremonial Iditarod start area.
  3. Balto statue: Make a short stop beside the route associated with Anchorage’s sled-dog traditions.
  4. Resolution Park: Continue west for views across Cook Inlet when visibility is good.
  5. Tony Knowles Coastal Trail: Follow a short section of the paved waterfront route before returning uphill.
  6. Anchorage Museum: Finish at the museum, allowing at least 90 minutes if entering.

From the museum, it is about 1 km (0.6 mi) back to the visitor-center area. Return to the exact shuttle or transfer point specified by the cruise line rather than attempting to walk to the ship.

More Active Option

Coastal Trail to Westchester Lagoon

This moderate out-and-back walk begins at the downtown end of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Allow approximately 2–2.5 hours for about 6 km (3.7 mi), including short viewpoint stops. The paved route has rolling slopes and possible wildlife encounters. Keep a safe distance from moose and never approach or feed them.

Practical Tips

  • Dress in layers and carry a waterproof outer layer; conditions can change quickly even in summer.
  • Do not plan to walk between the ship and downtown because of port restrictions and unsuitable roads.
  • Confirm whether the itinerary means Anchorage itself, Whittier or Seward before arranging independent transport.
  • For Turnagain Arm, Chugach State Park or other out-of-town trips, use a scheduled tour with a return time compatible with the ship.
  • Allow a generous margin for port security, shuttle queues and traffic when returning to the vessel.
