Baie-Comeau is a port town in Quebec Canada, located approx 420 km (260 mi) northeast of Quebec City.. It is on the banks of St Lawrence River and close to the mouth of Manicouagan River.

Port Baie-Comeau (locode CABCO) is one of all 9 St Lawrence cruise ports of call - together with Quebec City, Trois-Rivieres, Saguenay, Montreal, Sept-iles, Gaspe, Havre-Saint-Pierre and the Magdalen Islands.

There are 2 urban centers within city limits - Hauterive (population around 12,000) and Baie-Comeau proper (population around 10,000). The city is named after Comeau Bay, which honors the French naturalist Napoleon-Alexandre Comeau (1848-1923).

The city's oldest part is Vieux-Poste - the Old Post area near the mouth of the Amedee River. There in 1889 was established Saint-Eugene-de-Manicouagan Mission. The first sawmill in Cote-Nord was built here in 1898 by the Jalbert brothers (Damase and Henri). The sawmill ceased operations in 1907 after the timber stock was swept into Saint Lawrence. Route 138 was extended to Saint-Eugene-de-Manicouagan in 1916.

Baie-Comeau itself (the town's eastern part) was established in 1936 when a paper mill was built there by Colonel Robert McCormick (1880-1955, publisher of Chicago Tribune). In 1937 the town was incorporated. The region continued to experience economic development with the creation of hydroelectric power stations (on Outardes and Manicouagan Rivers) - Chutes-aux-Outardes Station (opened 1952), aluminum smelter (1958), grain warehouses (Canada's largest, opened 1959). Currently, the region's largest industries are pulp and paper and hydroelectricity.

In 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 10 ship calls with around 6000 tourists (passengers and crew). The two newcomers were the Geman liners MS Hamburg (Plantours) and MS Artania (Phoenix Reisen). Port's stats for 2017 showed around 1/3 of all passengers being Germans, 41% from the USA and 17,5% from the UK. Among the most popular cruise shore excursions are Lumberjack Village (located approx 29 km / 18 mi from the port), Eglise Sainte Amelie (Church of St Amelie), The Garden of the Glaciers (scientific indoor-outdoor museum), Hotel le Manoir, Manic-2 (hydroelectric dam), Parc Nature de Pointe-aux-Outardes.

For season 2018, the port installed a new passenger gangway system (mobile bridge) that improved its capacity to handle large-sized vessels. The number of scheduled ship calls was 21 calls (from 11 different vessels).

In August 2018, at Parc des Pionniers were installed 3 giant megaphones. The project was funded by Tourisme Quebec (total investment nearly CAD 30,000). These are large-scale wooden structures, each with a diameter of 12 ft (3,7 m) and depth 12 ft/3,7 m. The 3 "megaphone sites" can be also used as gathering places for both citizens and tourists.

 

In November 2023 was announced that effective January 1st, 2024, Baie-Comeau Port's cruise shipping operations (managed by Baie-Comeau Cruises) are transferred from the City to the Baie-Comeau Port Management Corporation.

Baie-Comeau cruise terminal

Downtown Baie-Comeau is located approx 1,5km (1 mi) from the cruise port or approx 20-min walking distance. The port provides free of charge shuttle buses from the passenger terminal. Since June 2018, at the terminal is available bicycle rental service (electric and tandem bicycles, kids bicycles, scooters). Pioneer Promenade links the terminal to Pioneer Park.

The port offers a dock and cruise terminal capable of handling big vessels. During double-call (2 visiting ships) days a nearby anchorage is additionally used.

Independent with some planning or transport. Baie-Comeau’s compact Marquette district is suitable for a relaxed independent visit, but the region’s hydroelectric and nature attractions require prearranged transport or an organized excursion. Cruise ships normally dock rather than tender.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Ships use the commercial port near the ferry terminal, approximately 2 km (1.2 mi) from the Marquette district. The port area is industrial, so passengers should follow marked pedestrian routes and crew instructions.

  • Shuttle: A cruise-call shuttle is often provided between the terminal and central Baie-Comeau, but arrangements can vary. Confirm the stops, fare and final return time on board.
  • Walking: Reaching the Marquette district takes roughly 25–30 minutes. The shuttle is generally the more convenient option.
  • Taxi: Useful for local viewpoints and essential for attractions outside town. Availability can be limited when a ship is in port, so arrange longer trips in advance.
  • Public transport: Municipal transport is not designed around cruise calls and is not a practical choice for most sightseeing itineraries.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore the Marquette District

Allow 2–3 hours for Place La Salle, local shops, Parc des Pionniers and Sainte-Amélie Church. The church is noted for its extensive interior frescoes, although visitor access should be checked locally. This is the easiest option to arrange independently and can be combined with lunch or a waterfront walk.

Walk through the Boisé de la Pointe Saint-Gilles

This wooded area beside the Marquette district offers trails through forest close to the center of town. Combine a short trail with Parc des Pionniers and the waterfront. Allow 1–2 hours, wear suitable footwear and expect natural surfaces, roots and occasional damp ground.

Visit the Jean-Lesage Generating Station at Manic-2

Manic-2 is the most practical hydroelectric excursion from Baie-Comeau, approximately 25 km (15.5 mi) inland. Allow about 3 hours including transport and a guided visit. Public tours are seasonal and operate at set times; reservations and government-issued identification may be required. A ship excursion or prearranged private tour is preferable.

Scenic locations such as the St-Pancrace viewpoint and Parc Nature de Pointe-aux-Outardes reveal more of the Côte-Nord landscape but are not practical on foot from the ship. Pointe-aux-Outardes is roughly 30 km (18.6 mi) from Baie-Comeau and has forest, marsh, dunes and birdwatching trails. Allow at least 3–4 hours with prearranged transport.

Pure walking time: about 50 minutes
Recommended time: 2–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with mostly urban walking and optional uneven forest paths.

  1. Start at the cruise shuttle stop: Confirm the precise return point and final departure before leaving.
  2. Place La Salle: Walk through the district’s principal commercial street and browse its small shops.
  3. Sainte-Amélie Church: View the church and, if open, its richly painted interior.
  4. Parc des Pionniers: Continue toward the waterfront for views across the St. Lawrence estuary.
  5. Boisé de la Pointe Saint-Gilles: Follow a short section of woodland trail rather than attempting the entire network.
  6. Return through the Marquette district: Leave time for refreshments before returning to the shuttle stop.

Passengers with limited mobility can omit the woodland section and remain on paved streets around Place La Salle, the church and Parc des Pionniers.

Excursions and Practical Planning

  • Organized excursion recommended: Manic-2, Pointe-aux-Outardes and other attractions outside the urban area.
  • Manic-5 and the Daniel-Johnson Dam are much farther inland than Manic-2 and consume a substantial part of a port call. Attempt them only through an excursion timed specifically for the ship.
  • Autumn weather can be cold, wet and windy. Carry a waterproof outer layer and wear shoes suitable for damp trails.
  • French is the principal local language, although staff working with cruise visitors may speak English.
  • Allow at least 45–60 minutes between returning to the port area and the ship’s all-aboard time. Use a larger margin for independent trips outside Baie-Comeau.
