Cape Verde Islands

Cape Verde is an archipelago, not a single cruise port. Ships may call at Mindelo on São Vicente, Praia on Santiago, Palmeira on Sal, Sal Rei on Boa Vista, or a smaller island port. Docking arrangements and practical sightseeing differ considerably, so check the port and island shown on the ship’s itinerary before making plans.

Main Cruise Calls

Mindelo, São Vicente

Mindelo is Cape Verde’s principal cruise destination. Ships normally berth at Porto Grande or the dedicated cruise facilities, although operational arrangements can change. Follow the marked passenger exit; central Mindelo is generally about a 10–20-minute walk away.

The waterfront, markets, Rua de Lisboa, Praça Amílcar Cabral and colorful central streets can be explored without transport. Laginha Beach is also walkable, while Monte Verde, Baía das Gatas and the island’s volcanic interior require a taxi or tour.

Praia, Santiago

Cruise ships use the commercial port southeast of central Praia. The historic Plateau district is elevated and approximately 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) from the port area, making a short taxi more practical than walking, especially in the heat.

For a half-day, combine the Plateau’s squares, cathedral, market streets and viewpoints. Cidade Velha, approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) west of Praia, is the stronger cultural excursion but requires a taxi with an agreed return arrangement or an organized tour.

Palmeira, Sal

Palmeira is a small working port and fishing village. There is little to occupy a full cruise call within walking distance. Santa Maria, the island’s main resort area, is about 20 km (12.4 mi) away and normally takes around 25–30 minutes by road.

A taxi or island tour can combine Pedra de Lume’s salt crater, the Buracona lava coast, Espargos and Santa Maria. Public shared transport is less suitable for a time-limited cruise visit because routes and departures may not fit the ship’s schedule.

Sal Rei, Boa Vista

Large ships may anchor and use tenders because the harbor is small; confirm the ship’s landing arrangements. Sal Rei itself is compact, and Praia do Estoril can be reached on foot from town.

Boa Vista’s dunes, remote beaches, desert interior and Cabo Santa Maria shipwreck require a 4x4, taxi or organized excursion. Do not attempt long independent beach or desert trips without confirmed return transport.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Walk Through Mindelo

Allow 2–4 hours for the waterfront, markets, central squares and local streets. This is the easiest independent option in the archipelago and can be extended with time at Laginha Beach.

Tour São Vicente’s Landscapes

A half-day drive can include Monte Verde viewpoints, the north coast and Baía das Gatas. Transport is essential, and visibility from higher ground can vary with cloud and haze.

Combine Praia with Cidade Velha

Allow approximately 4–5 hours including transport and sightseeing. A guided trip is useful for understanding the historic sites and removes uncertainty about finding a return taxi.

Take an Island Circuit on Sal

Allow 4–6 hours for a selection of Pedra de Lume, Buracona, Espargos and Santa Maria. An organized tour or taxi hired for the full circuit is more reliable than arranging separate rides at each stop.

Explore Boa Vista by 4x4

Boa Vista’s main attractions are dispersed and often reached over rough or sandy tracks. A guided half-day excursion is preferable to independent driving, particularly when tender schedules shorten the usable time ashore.

Self-Guided Mindelo Walking Route

Waterfront, Markets and Laginha Beach

Distance: Approximately 4 km (2.5 mi), depending on the berth and return route.
Pure walking time: About 60 minutes.
Recommended time: 2.5–4 hours.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate; mainly paved urban streets, with heat and uneven surfaces in places.

1. Leave the passenger area and follow the waterfront toward central Mindelo.
2. Stop at the Torre de Belém replica beside the harbor.
3. Continue past the fish market to the Municipal Market.
4. Walk along Rua de Lisboa through the commercial center.
5. Visit Praça Amílcar Cabral, commonly called Praça Nova.
6. Continue along the waterfront toward Laginha Beach for a swim, drink or short rest.
7. Return to the ship on foot or take a taxi from the beach if time is limited.

Check the exact terminal exit before starting, as the distance varies by berth. Keep enough time for the walk back through the port entrance and any security procedures.

Practical Tips

• Confirm both the island and port name; “Cape Verde Islands” alone is not sufficient for detailed planning.
• Taxis are the most practical independent transport outside Mindelo. Agree on the fare, itinerary, waiting time and return journey before leaving.
• Carry some Cape Verdean escudos or small euro banknotes. Card acceptance and change for euros can be limited away from resort areas.
• Expect strong sun, wind and limited shade. Carry water and use sun protection even on short walks.
• Do not depend on inter-island ferries during a cruise call; crossings and onward transport consume too much time and schedules can change.
• At tender ports, allow additional time for queues and the final tender deadline.
• For independent trips outside the port town, plan to return at least 60–90 minutes before the required onboard time, with a larger margin for tenders or remote excursions.
