Clarkston WA (port locode USCKL) and Lewiston ID (port locode USLWS) are twin cities and inland ports on the Snake River. Clarkston is in Washington(Asotin County) and has population around 8,000. Lewiston is in Idaho (Nez Perce County) and has population around 35,000.

Both port towns are part of the Lewiston-Clarkston metro area (total population around 60,000) and are located just across the river.

Clarkston WA was founded in 1862 (as Jawbone Flats) and officially incorporated in 1902. The city is named after William Clark (American explorer and territorial governor, 1770-1838). Lewiston City is named after Meriwether Lewis (US politician, 1774-1809).

Port Clarkston has one of the biggest gantry cranes on a navigable inland waterway east of Portland OR. A major industry in the area is agriculture and the port handles plenty of barge traffic carrying grains. Clearwater Paper Corporation transports sawdust and wood chips via barges for use at Lewiston manufacturing plant. Due to the inland location on the Snake River, the port handles goods headed inland to distributors upstream and out to Portland-Vancouver. Port's marina provides berthing for pleasure boats and yachts, most of which cruise through the nearby Hells Canyon.

As a cruise port, Clarkston WA/Lewiston ID is a homeport/departure port in the schedules of USA's largest river cruise companies - ACL (American Cruise Lines) and AQSC (American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company).

Clarkston is a small Snake River port beside Lewiston, Idaho. Riverboats normally dock at the Port of Clarkston’s Gateway Dock, next to Granite Lake Park. The immediate waterfront is easy to explore on foot, but the region’s main attractions require a taxi, cruise-line transfer or pre-booked tour.

Independent sightseeing with some planning or transport. A short waterfront walk is simple independently. Use organized transport for Hells Canyon, wineries and viewpoints outside the two cities.

Getting from the Cruise Dock

  • Gateway Dock: Ships dock rather than tender. The secured floating dock has ramps leading into the Port of Clarkston and Granite Lake Park.
  • On foot: Paved waterfront paths begin beside the dock. Central Clarkston is roughly 1 km (0.6 mi) away, although its visitor attractions are limited.
  • Lewiston: Downtown Lewiston lies across the Snake River in Idaho. A taxi or arranged shuttle is more practical than walking, particularly in hot weather.
  • Public transport: Local buses serve Clarkston and Lewiston, but routes and operating hours are limited. They are better suited to passengers with ample time than to a tightly timed port call.
  • Separate docks: Lewiston also has its own cruise-boat dock. Check the ship’s daily information before planning a walk or meeting an independent tour.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Hells Canyon by Jet Boat

This is the region’s signature experience. Guided jet boats travel upstream on the Snake River through increasingly remote canyon scenery, with possible wildlife sightings and stops connected with Indigenous and pioneer history.

Tours can occupy most of the port call; even a half-day trip may last about six hours. Reserve in advance through the cruise line or a local operator and confirm the boarding point and return time. Independent road access does not provide the same canyon experience.

Granite Lake Park and the Riverfront

The easiest independent option begins directly outside the dock. Granite Lake Park has paved paths, lawns, picnic tables and views across the Snake River. It connects with the longer Clearwater–Snake River National Recreation Trail.

Allow one to two hours for a relaxed walk. The route is mostly level and suitable for passengers who prefer to remain close to the ship.

Hells Gate State Park and Discovery Center

Hells Gate State Park is on the Idaho side of the Snake River, approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) from the Clarkston dock by road. Its Lewis and Clark Discovery Center has indoor exhibits, an outdoor interpretive area and a film about the expedition’s journey through Idaho. The park also offers riverfront paths, picnic areas and a seasonal swimming beach.

Allow around three hours including transport. A taxi or pre-arranged transfer is the practical choice; arrange the return journey before leaving the dock and confirm that the Discovery Center is open.

Downtown Lewiston and Local History

Lewiston offers a compact collection of shops, restaurants and historic buildings across the river from Clarkston. The Nez Perce County Historical Society Museum, near the southern end of downtown, provides useful context on the Lewis–Clark expedition and local communities.

Allow two to three hours with taxi transport. Museum opening days and hours can be limited, so verify them before departure.

Scenic Drive or Local Wine Visit

The hills surrounding the Lewis–Clark Valley provide broad views over Clarkston, Lewiston and the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers. Several wineries are also scattered through the valley.

These locations are not practical on foot. Choose a cruise excursion, guided tour or pre-arranged vehicle rather than relying on finding transport after arrival.

Self-Guided Waterfront Walk

Gateway Dock, Granite Lake Park and River Trail

  1. Leave the secured Gateway Dock and enter Granite Lake Park.
  2. Follow the paved path through the landscaped park.
  3. Continue along the Snake River greenbelt, keeping the river beside you.
  4. Pause at open viewpoints toward Lewiston and the surrounding valley hills.
  5. Turn back at a comfortable point and return along the same waterfront path.

Distance: Approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) round trip, depending on the turnaround point.

Walking time: About 40–50 minutes without stops; allow 1–1.5 hours at a relaxed pace.

Difficulty: Easy. The route is largely flat and paved, with little shade on some sections. Because it is an out-and-back walk, it can be shortened easily.

Practical Tips

  • Clarkston and Lewiston function as one visitor area but are in different states and separated by the Snake River.
  • Summer afternoons can be very hot. Carry water and use sun protection, especially on the exposed river trail.
  • Pre-book taxis and private tours when possible; this is a small regional destination with limited on-demand transport.
  • Wear secure footwear and protect cameras and phones from spray on a jet-boat excursion.
  • For independent trips across the river, leave extra time for traffic and the return to the secured dock.
  • Follow the ship’s all-aboard time rather than a tour operator’s general estimate, and keep a sensible return margin.
