Corner Brook is a port city located in northeastern Canada, on the Newfoundland Island's west coast. The city is Atlantic Canada's most northern one and has population around 20,000.
Located at the mouth of Humber River, on the Bay of Islands, Corner Brook is the biggest population centre in the Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador - following Saint Johns. As such, it functions as service centre for northern and western Newfoundland. The city is on the same latitude as Gaspe (Quebec), which has similar landscape and size but is located on the other side of Saint Lawrence Gulf.
The area was surveyed by Captain James Cook in 1767. James Cook Historic Site is standing on Crow Hill overlooking the town. By the mid-19th-century, town's population was less than 100. The inhabitants were engaged in lumber work and fishing. Today, Corner Brook Pulp & Paper Mill is a major employer for the area. The town boasts the largest regional hospital in western Newfoundland. It also has a wide range of shopping and retail businesses, as well as provincial and federal government offices. The town also houses the Memorial University, Grenfell Campus, campuses of College of the North Atlantic and Academy Canada, as well as the province's newest high school - Corner Brook Regional High.
In 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 13,186 passengers plus 6,901 crew. In 2017, maiden port calls made the RSSC-Regent ships Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Navigator, also Vision of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) and Artania (Phoenix Reisen).
In 2018, the port had scheduled 15 ship calls with estimated around 15,500 passengers. Maiden port calls were booked by AIDAvita (AIDA), Arcadia (P&O UK) and Crystal Symphony (Crystal Ocean).
Corner Brook NL cruise terminal
Cruise ships to Corner Brook NF dock near the tow center. The walking distance from the cruise port is about 10 minutes. Shuttle buses arrive at the cruise port 1/2 hour after the ship's arrival and 1 hour prior to its departure. The shuttle service is provided by the Corner Brook Port authority and is free of charge.
For passenger transportation between the port's docking pier and the town are often used school buses (serving as complimentary shuttles). The buses' drop off point is right in downtown, from where passengers can visit the town's most popular tourist attractions - City Hall, City Library, CBMA (Corner Brook Museum and Archives), CDLI (Corner Brook War Memorial), the Rotary Arts Centre. Within short walk are also shops, restaurants, cafes, churches.
In 2018 was inaugurated a new permanent dockside facility. The new building (not cruise terminal) houses a small market area and a tourist center (for passenger welcome activities).
