The Rock of Gibraltar and its counterpart in Northern Africa (Mt Abyla) were known in ancient times as "Pillars of Hercules". In 711 AD, the Moors (Arabs from North Africa) landed there and named the rock "Jebel al-Tarik". Spain conquered Gibraltar in 1462, but in 1704 (during Spanish Succession War / 1701-1714) it was taken by the British. In 1713, under the Treaty of Utrecht, this territory was officially assigned to Great Britain. Since then, territory's ownership is a matter for discussion (political tensions) between UK and Spain.

In 2017, Port Gibraltar handled a total of 257 cruise ship calls and over 400,000 passengers. These numbers showed an increase over 2016, when the cruise port was visited 225 times and by around 350,000 passengers.
