Ambience Review
Review of Ambience
The 1991-built MV Ambience cruise ship is currently owned and operated by the UK-based Ambassador Cruise Line. Her fleetmates include Ambition (1999-built, formerly AIDAmira/Costa neoRiviera) and CFC Renaissance.
Previously, the vessel was known as "Pacific Dawn" (P&O Australia), "Amy Johnson" (CMV), and "Satoshi" (Ocean Builders’ "Crypto Cruise Ship" 2020–2021). She was originally launched as Regal Princess (link refers to the 2014-built namesake). As "Pacific Dawn", the ship was operated by P&O Australia (a Carnival Corporation-owned company) between 2007 and 2020. During her P&O service, she sailed approximately 1.37 million miles (~2.2 million km) and carried around 2 million passengers.
While operated by P&O Australia, the vessel (IMO number 8521232) was UK-flagged (MMSI number 235059368) and registered in Southampton. Under Ocean Builders’ ownership, she was reflagged to Panama (MMSI 355852000) and registered in Colon.
Currently, MV Ambience is Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311001109) and registered in Nassau.
In January 2025, Ambassador Cruise Line merged with the French company Compagnie Francaise de Croisieres (CFC), forming the Ambassador Group (shipowner). Following the merger, the Ambassador fleet was joined by CFC Renaissance.
History and ownership
On December 18, 2020, Ocean Builders Panama announced the termination of the "Crypto Cruise Ship" project and the sale of MS Satoshi for scrapping at Alang, India.
In February 2021, Pacific Dawn was scheduled to leave P&O Australia. Her final cruise was set for February 8, 2021 (Melbourne to Singapore via Brisbane). This voyage was offered in segments: short-break (Melbourne–Brisbane), Asia Explorer (Brisbane–Singapore), and the full 17-night back-to-back (B2B) cruise.
In April 2021, P&O Australia also planned to retire Pacific Aria (now Celestyal Journey). In November 2019, presale agreements for both ships were signed with Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV UK). Pacific Dawn was to be renamed "CMV Amy Johnson", and Pacific Aria as "CMV Ida Pfeiffer". After CMV filed for bankruptcy in July 2020, Carnival Corporation reopened both vessels for sale.
- On September 29, 2020, P&O Australia confirmed the sale of Pacific Dawn without disclosing the buyer. The ship was last refurbished by P&O in 2017 and was scheduled for another refit in April 2021. Pacific Aria was sold in mid-October 2020.
- A total of 14 Pacific Dawn voyages (scheduled from December 4 through February 11) were canceled. Details on these cruises are available in the ship's Wiki section.
Ocean Builders, through the Panama-based company Wake Asset Co Ltd, converted Pacific Dawn into a residential ship called "MS Satoshi". Prior to her Transatlantic repositioning to Panama, she underwent drydock works at Gibdock Shipyard (Gibraltar).
Starting November 5, 2020, the first 100 of the ship’s 777 staterooms were offered for purchase, priced between USD 25,000 and 50,000. Short-term rentals were also available. The auction for the initial 100 units ended on November 28.
The ship was named in honor of Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin.
Chad Elwartkowski, CEO of Ocean Builders, led the "Crypto Cruise Ship" initiative, which primarily targeted Bitcoin enthusiasts. The vessel was marketed as a floating residential community where payments onboard could be made using Bitcoin as well as traditional currencies. Access to the offshore MS Satoshi was to be via a 30-minute ferry ride from Panama City. Some staterooms were available for rent as residential or office spaces.
In May 2021, it was announced that the newly founded Ambassador Cruise Line (headquartered in Purfleet-on-Thames, Essex, UK) would operate the renamed "MS Ambience". The company targeted the UK source market, aiming to fill the void left by CMV (founded in 2009, defunct since 2020).
- Ambassador Cruise Line’s President and CEO is Christian Verhounig (also CEO of CVI Group Ltd). Other executives include Phil Gardner (Chief Commercial Officer), Matthias Seeger (Chief Financial Officer), and Nick Hughes (Chief Operating Officer).
- CVI Group Ltd, based in London, was incorporated on August 18, 2020, with its first statement date on August 17, 2021.
- In late August 2020, CVI Group acquired CMV assets including websites, IP, and customer databases.
The image below also shows Ocean Builders' planned floating "SeaPod homes" for MS Satoshi residents and guests.
On November 18, 2020, the 29-year-old MS Satoshi departed Malta for Gibraltar, arriving on November 23 for drydock renovations, including hull and superstructure repainting. She was anchored off Colon, Panama, from December 2020 through February 2021.
On February 23, she began her Transatlantic crossing from Panama to Europe (Colon to Valletta, Malta), arriving for bunkering on March 24, and docking in Bar, Montenegro on March 27. Rumors circulated that she had been resold to a new cruise company planning to begin operations in Q3 2021.
Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the 1900-passenger ship Ambience is ideal for families and groups due to interconnecting staterooms. Following her 2017 drydock, the ship now features an outdoor Big Screen (midship on the Sundeck), a new Aqua Park with dual waterslides (aft Sundeck), The Pantry (buffet-style food market), a redesigned Atrium (decks 5-6-7), and upgraded lounges, bars, and wellness facilities.
Although Ambience has a maximum capacity of 1915 guests, Ambassador limits occupancy to 1400, resulting in a space ratio similar to many luxury liners.
In July 2024, Ambassador introduced ship tours titled "Exploring Ambition" and "Exploring Ambience". These guided tours provide a behind-the-scenes look at the galley, Engine Control Room, Navigation Bridge/Wheelhouse, and Theater Lounge. Each package includes a gift bag (lanyard, souvenir mug, notepad and pen), a Visitor Pass, a photo with the Captain, a Q&A with the Hotel Director, and snacks and beverages. Tours are limited to 10 guests per group and priced at GBP 89 per person.

Ambience Wiki
The Fincantieri Monfalcone-built ship Pacific Dawn (hull/yard number 5840) began service as "Regal Princess" in 1991. Initially operated by Princess Cruises (1991–2007), the vessel was transferred to P&O Australia's fleet and renamed "Pacific Dawn" on November 8, 2007, following an extensive drydock refurbishment. She was homeported in Brisbane QLD, sailing from Port Hamilton, Queensland, Australia. The ship was launched (floated out) on March 29, 1990, delivered on July 20, 1991, and christened as Regal Princess on August 8 in New York City by godmother Margaret Thatcher (UK Prime Minister, 1979–1990).
By design, Pacific Dawn is a sistership to Pacific Jewel (MS Karnika) and similar to Pacific Pearl (CMV Columbus) and Crown Princess.
The ship has a volume of 70,285 GT, a weight of 7,002 tons, a max beam of 36 m (118 ft), and a draft of 8.1 m (26 ft). The powerplant consists of two MAN marine diesel engines (model 8L58/64) with a total output of 38.88 MW.
While operated by P&O Australia, the vessel (IMO 8521232) was UK-flagged (MMSI 235059368). Pacific Dawn itineraries featured roundtrips from Queensland to South Pacific Islands (Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Espiritu Santo), Papua New Guinea, and various Australian ports. Key destinations included the Great Barrier Reef, Willis Island, and Moreton Island. Themed "Cruises to Nowhere" featured no port stops and included experiences such as "Food and Wine", "Music", "Comedy", and "Sports" cruises, with all themed entertainment and onboard activities included in the cruise fare.
In early July 2020, CMV UK (Cruise & Maritime Voyages) announced that 50% of bookings for their new flagship "Amy Johnson" (Pacific Dawn) for the 2021 season had already been sold. Bookings made before July 31, 2020, benefited from CMV's buy-one-get-one-free promotion.
From March to October 2021, the ship remained docked at Port Bar, Montenegro. On October 14, 2021, the ship, renamed "Satoshi", entered Viktor Lenac Shipyard (Rijeka, Croatia) for an extensive drydock refit scheduled for completion in February 2022. The project included installing new machinery (equipment, wastewater treatment, water purification, ballast water, scrubbers), maintenance work, and recertification.
MS Ambience’s maiden voyage and the inauguration of Ambassador Cruise Line in 2022 were rescheduled from April 6 to April 20, with a 4-night roundtrip itinerary from London-Tilbury to Hamburg. The inaugural season featured European deployments (7- to 14-night itineraries) to destinations in the UK/British Isles, the Baltic, Norway/Norwegian Fjords, Iceland, and the Mediterranean.
Ambassador Ambience’s Master is Captain Hugh Maynard (born in Maldon, Essex, England), who began his maritime career in 1979 as an assistant steward.
On March 31, 2022, Ambassador Cruise Line announced that Ambience would be named by godmother Sally Jane Janet Gunnell (born 1966), a British track and field athlete active from 1984 to 1997. Sally Gunnell was appointed Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1993, Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998, and Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex in 2011.
The christening ceremony took place on April 19 at Port Tilbury and was attended by Ambassador’s CEO Christian Verhounig, along with over 500 VIP guests, including media, travel agents, partners, and suppliers.
In May 2023, MAN Diesel & Turbo France SAS (a subsidiary of MAN Energy Solutions) retrofitted Ambassador Ambience’s diesel engines. The MAN PrimeServ contract included the installation of a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (reducing NOx emissions by ~90%) and replacing both turbochargers with new MAN TCA 66 units.
Ambassador Ambience Refurbishment 2023
The ship’s latest drydock was in 2023 (scheduled for November 18 to December 10) and was conducted by Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH (Bremerhaven, Germany).
The drydocking included routine maintenance, propeller shaft repairs, hull cleaning and painting, technical overhauls, machinery upgrades (including new propeller shaft seals), and classification inspections.
Inspections revealed damage to the propeller shafts and stern bearings (due to metal grinding), which posed a risk of oil leakage and environmental pollution. The damaged shafts (each 20 m/66 ft long, weighing over 30 tons) were sent to a Danish company for specialist repairs. The extended repair timeline impacted the ship’s schedule, resulting in the cancellation of four voyages. MS Ambition temporarily replaced Ambience for those sailings.
MS Ambience resumed operations with the "Grand Around the World Cruise 2024" on January 6.

Pacific Dawn Refurbishment 2017 Review
The list of deck plan changes following the ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment in Singapore (February 19–March 15) included:
- Installation of a new Aqua Park (state-of-the-art waterpark on the top deck).
- On Lido Deck 12, "The Pantry" (a buffet-style marketplace with multiple fresh food outlets) replaced the traditional Lido Buffet restaurant "Plantation Restaurant". The Pantry includes the Mediterranean-style "Nic & Toni's" and the seafood venue "Shell & Bones".
- "Shell & Bones Seafood & Grill", located aft as part of The Pantry, is complimentary during the day and transforms into an à la carte venue in the evening. The menu features Australian favorites such as Singaporean Chili Crab (Queensland) and Steamed Blue Mussels with Wine (South Australia). The grill offers dishes like slow-cooked beef short ribs, Portuguese-style roast chicken, and vegetarian options.
- Deck 14 received a dual waterslide installation.
Additional venue renovations included the Atrium areas (midship on decks 5-6-7), Charlie’s Bar (deck 5), The Orient Bar (deck 7), The Dome Bar Lounge (deck 14), Pool Café (deck 12), Promenade Bar (deck 7), Techno Store, Lobby Reception, and the Spa.
