Jost Van Dyke Island (aka JVD) is BVI's smallest (among the 4 main British Virgin Islands), with land area 8 km2 (3 mi2) and population under 500. It is located in Caribbean Sea, approx 8 km (5 mi) north of St John Island (USVI and 8 km (5 mi) northwest of Tortola (BVI).
Like many neighboring islands, Jost Van Dyke is mountainous and volcanic in origin, with highest elevation point (Majohnny Hill) 321 m (1053 ft). The island is accessible by private boats and ferries from St Thomas (USVI), St John (USVI) and Tortola. The primary tourist destination is Belle Vue (Great Harbour), which beach is lined up with small restaurants and bars.
Belle Vue is among BVI's busiest ports: in 2008, nearly 7000 boats and yachts docked at the harbour. it is common for boaters to anchor off the beaches and swim to shore, paying for drinks with wet cash.
