Lauterbach-Rugen (Rugen Island Germany)

Lauterbach is a Baltic Sea cruise port and small village on Rugen Island (Germany's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state) with population around 500. Lauterbach has a harbor port and is connected to Rugensche Baderbahn (24-km long narrow-gauge railway line) connecting the island towns Putbus, Binz, Sellin, Baabe and Gohren.

A small settlement was founded in 1819 around a paper mill and soon developed as a vacation destination after Rugen's first seaside resort (Neuendorf) was opened in 1816. The port was built in 1834 as a jetty/landing stage for leisure boats and steamships arriving from Sweden and Germany (Stettin/Szczecin and Stralsund). In the 19th-century, also well-developed were boat-building, commercial fishing and trade. Lauterbach's current economy is based on tourism - restaurants, accommodation and the yacht marina (serving riverboats and cruise ships). In close proximity is Vilm Island (tour boat destination).
