Greifswald (Germany)

Greifswald is a Baltic Sea cruise port and city in Germany's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state and part of Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The town has population around 60,000 and is located approx 240 km from Berlin (country's capital) and approx 260 km from Hamburg (the country's largest seaport). Approx 80 km (50 mi) from Greifswald is the Germany-Poland border. The nearest larger cities are Stralsund and Rostock.

Greifswald is crossed by the small Ryck River and flanks Baltic Sea. In close proximity are also the German islands Rugen and Usedom. The town is best-known for Universitat Greifswald (research university, one of Europe's oldest / founded in 1456 AD). City's economy is based mainly on the university (with ~13,000 students) and local research facilities (~5,000 employees). The close proximity of Rugen and Usedom supports the tourism industry (including ship cruises). Among the major employers are Solon SE (one of Europe's largest solar panel manufacturers), HanseYachts (world's 3rd-largest yacht building company), Riemser Arzneimittel (pharmaceutical company), Siemens AG (Europe's largest industrial manufacturer).
