Brindisi is port city located on Italy's Adriatic Sea coast, and in the Apulia region. Brindisi was the main naval port of Roman Empire on the Adriatic Sea in ancient times.
Among the town's notable tourist sights is the 13th century castle built by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II (1194-1250). The city declined with the collapse of Roman Empire. Sacked by the Saracens repeatedly, it was rebuilt in the 11th century and served as a embarkation port for the Crusades.
With the opening of Suez Canal in 1869, Brindisi became a port of call for cargo vessels on the trade routes to and from eastern Asia. During WW1 (1914-1918) the port was an important naval base. From Brindisi, cruise ship tourists can visit the baroque town of Lecce.
