Thionville is a Moselle River cruise port and town in France's Grand Est region (Moselle department) with population around 40,000. Until 1918 (the end of WW1/1914-18) the town was named Diedenhofen and was part of Germany.
Town's economy is largely based on heavy industries (steel production and processing), mainly due to iron ore mines. Many residents commute daily to Luxembourg (the France-Luxemburg border is approx 15 km / 10 mi) to work. Trains connect Thionville directly with Luxembourg City, Metz, Nancy, Paris City, Strasbourg, also with Belgium (Brussels) and Switzerland (Zurich). Highway A31 connects with Luxembourg City and Metz.
As cruise port, Thionville was included in the 2021 schedule of the German tour company Nicko Cruises (owned by Mystic Cruises) with the riverboat Casanova.
