Valley's length is approx 40 km (25 ml) and its best-known travel destination is Durnstein - where King Richard I of England (The Lion-Heart / 1157-1199) was held captive by Duke Leopold V (The Virtuous / 1157-1194). The riverside scenery features Benedectine Abbeys (monasteries like Gottweig and Melk), ruins and castles combined with picturesque villages, small towns and vineyards.
