Chioggia is a small port town (population around 25,000) part of Venice's metropolitan area. The port is on Chioggia Island, located at the entrance to Venice Lagoon - approx 25 km (16 mi) south of Venice City/Venezia. A causeway connects the island to Sottomarina (town) and the mainland.

Chioggia's best-known tourist attractions include several canals (the main is Canale Vena), narrow streets, medieval churches (built in the 16th-17th centuries), Chioggia Duomo (early-17th-century cathedral).

Chioggia Island's town Sottomarina has around 80 hotels and campgrounds for waterfront leisure activities and tourism.

As cruise port, Chioggia (locode ITCHI) is included in the schedules of two of Europe's largest river cruise companies - Uniworld and CroisiEurope.

Next tables show companies' itineraries as port sequences and times (arrival/departure).

Venice City's cruise port Chioggia is also included in the schedules of ultra-luxury sea travel brands (like Ritz-Carlton) which operate smaller-sized ships and superyachts.

At a Glance

Independent sightseeing: Easy for Chioggia’s historic centre; some planning or local transport is needed for Sottomarina Beach. Venice requires a long transfer and is better approached through a cruise-line excursion when time ashore is limited.

Chioggia is a compact lagoon town with canals, bridges, a working fish market and a long pedestrian-friendly main street. It provides enough for an enjoyable half-day without making the much longer journey to Venice.

Getting from the Cruise Port

Ocean cruise ships normally dock at the Isola dei Saloni terminal on Via Isola Saloni. This is a pier rather than a tender landing. Passengers leave through the terminal’s controlled exit, so follow the ship’s instructions rather than attempting to walk through operational port areas.

The southern end of the historic centre is approximately 1–1.5 km (0.6–0.9 mi) from the terminal, depending on the passenger exit used. Allow roughly 15–25 minutes on foot. The route is generally level, but some sections near the port carry ordinary road traffic. Cruise lines may arrange transfers on certain calls, but these should be confirmed aboard.

Once inside the old town, most principal sights are within walking distance. Local buses and taxis are more useful for Sottomarina than for central Chioggia.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Explore Chioggia’s Historic Centre

Recommended time: 2–4 hours. Practical independently: Yes.

Enter the old town near Porta Garibaldi and follow Corso del Popolo past the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Basilica of San Giacomo and the Church of Sant’Andrea. Its clock tower contains one of the world’s oldest working tower clocks. Continue to Vigo Bridge for views across the lagoon.

Canal Vena runs parallel to the main street and is crossed by a succession of small bridges. Exploring one direction beside the canal and returning along Corso del Popolo creates an easy loop with cafés, shops and several opportunities to stop for seafood or cicchetti.

Visit the Retail Fish Market and Fishing Quarter

Recommended time: 30–60 minutes as part of an old-town walk. Practical independently: Yes.

The covered retail fish market stands beside Canal Vena near Palazzo Granaio. It is most interesting earlier in the day, when stalls are active. Trading days and hours can vary, so treat it as an atmospheric stop rather than the sole purpose of the visit. The nearby canals and working boats show Chioggia’s continuing connection with fishing.

Take a Lagoon Boat Trip

Recommended time: Commonly 1–2 hours, plus check-in time. Practical independently: With advance planning.

Local sightseeing boats may operate from the Vigo waterfront, offering views of Chioggia, the fishing harbour and the southern Venetian Lagoon. Departures are seasonal and weather-dependent. Check the actual return time before buying a ticket and do not rely on a departure that leaves little margin before all-aboard.

Spend Time at Sottomarina Beach

Recommended time: 2–4 hours. Practical independently: Yes, with a bus or taxi.

Sottomarina has a long sandy Adriatic beach approximately 3–4 km (1.9–2.5 mi) from the cruise terminal area. A taxi or local bus is preferable to walking when time is limited. Many sections are managed by seasonal bathing establishments, while facilities and services are reduced outside the summer season.

For a more active visit, continue toward the long Sottomarina sea wall. The distances become substantial, so this is best for passengers who have several hours and arrange transport for at least one direction.

Visit Pellestrina

Recommended time: At least 4 hours. Practical independently: Only with careful timetable planning.

ACTV Line 11 links Chioggia with the narrow island of Pellestrina. The journey offers a quieter lagoon experience with fishing villages and waterside views, but service intervals and connections must be checked on the day. This option is unsuitable for a short call or whenever the available return sailing leaves little contingency.

Self-Guided Walking Tours

Easy Old-Town Highlights Loop

Distance: Approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) from Porta Garibaldi. Pure walking time: About 45 minutes. Recommended total time: 2–3 hours. Difficulty: Easy, mostly level, with several short bridges.

  1. Porta Garibaldi: Begin at the southern gateway to the historic centre.
  2. Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta: See the cathedral and its adjoining bell tower.
  3. Corso del Popolo: Walk north along Chioggia’s broad principal street.
  4. Basilica of San Giacomo: Pause at one of the town’s most important churches.
  5. Sant’Andrea Clock Tower: View the historic tower and clock.
  6. Vigo Bridge: Cross the monumental bridge for lagoon and canal views.
  7. Canal Vena and Fish Market: Return south beside the canal, crossing selected bridges and passing the market.
  8. Porta Garibaldi: Rejoin the route toward the cruise terminal.

Passengers walking directly from and back to Isola dei Saloni should add approximately 2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi), depending on the terminal exit and chosen streets, plus 30–50 minutes of walking.

Extended Chioggia and Sottomarina Walk

Distance: Approximately 7–9 km (4.3–5.6 mi), excluding any walk along the sea wall. Pure walking time: 1.5–2 hours. Recommended total time: 3–5 hours. Difficulty: Moderate because of the length, exposed sections and summer heat.

Follow the old-town route to Vigo Bridge, return through Canal Vena, then cross toward Sottomarina and continue to the beachfront. Use a local bus or taxi for the return if time or energy is limited. This route is best on a long call and is less attractive in very hot, rainy or windy weather.

Chioggia or Venice?

Chioggia is a separate town at the southern end of the Venetian Lagoon; the cruise terminal is not beside central Venice. Direct regional buses connect Chioggia with Venice’s Piazzale Roma, usually via Mestre, but passengers should allow roughly 75–90 minutes each way plus waiting and city walking time. Traffic can increase the journey.

ACTV Line 11 provides a scenic combination of boat and bus connections through Pellestrina and the Lido, but it is not a quick route to central Venice. Reaching the main Venice sights normally requires further transport from the Lido.

For calls of only several hours, remain in Chioggia. On a long call, Venice may be possible, but an organized excursion or cruise-line transfer offers simpler timing. Independent visitors must verify current schedules and preserve a substantial return margin.

Practical Tips

  • Wear comfortable footwear: central Chioggia is level, but its bridges include steps.
  • Churches may close around midday and require respectful clothing.
  • The fish market is most worthwhile in the morning and may be quiet or closed later.
  • Check seasonal bus, boat and beach-service schedules on the day of the call.
  • Allow extra time for port security, traffic and any ship-arranged shuttle journey.
  • Return to the terminal well before the ship’s stated all-aboard time, especially after visiting Sottomarina, Pellestrina or Venice.
