Exuma is one of The Bahamas' island groups and districts, with 365+ cays (small islands), total area 72 mi2 (187 km2) and population around 7000. Exuma District's capital and largest town is George Town/Georgetown on Great Exuma (population around 1500).

The archipelago's largest is Great Exuma Island (port locode BSEXU( has length 37 mi / 60 km. A a small bridge links to Little Exuma Island.

Great Exuma has land area 61 mi2 (158 km2), Little Exuma - 11 mi2 (29 km2).

Compass Cay features a naturally-protected harbor, boat marina, beach lodge (with cottages for rental), and its best-known tourist attraction are the nurse sharks (swimming in the marina).

Independent sightseeing is possible with some planning. George Town is small enough to explore on foot, while beaches and the surrounding cays require a water taxi, road transfer or boat trip. Confirm your ship’s landing point before arranging independent transport, as calls in the Exumas may visit different locations.

Getting Ashore

For a George Town call, cruise ships generally anchor in Elizabeth Harbour and passengers go ashore by tender. Government Dock is close to the town center, but landing arrangements can vary by ship. Check the location and last tender time on board.

From George Town, water taxis serve Stocking Island. For beaches farther along Great Exuma or on Little Exuma, arrange a taxi or excursion and agree on the fare and return pickup in advance.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

George Town and the Waterfront

Allow about 1–2 hours for a relaxed look around the small center, including the waterfront, Lake Victoria, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church and local shops. This is the easiest option independently, although the town has a limited number of sights and some businesses may be closed when you visit.

Stocking Island Beach Day

Take a water taxi across Elizabeth Harbour to Stocking Island for a beach visit, swimming and lunch. Volleyball Beach, home to Chat ’N’ Chill, is a popular choice. The crossing itself takes about 5–10 minutes; allow at least 2–3 hours overall for the boat, beach time and return. Confirm the departure point, fare and return pickup before leaving George Town.

Water conditions vary, and facilities depend on where you land. Take sun protection and water, and allow extra time for the return boat and ship’s tender.

Great Exuma or Little Exuma Beaches

Jolly Hall Beach is a shorter road trip from George Town. For a longer outing, Tropic of Cancer Beach on Little Exuma offers a broad stretch of sand, but requires more driving time. Allow about 2–4 hours or longer, depending on the beach and how long you stay. Arrange a return taxi in advance; facilities and shade can be limited.

Explore the Cays by Boat

A guided boat trip can include sandbars, snorkeling or wildlife viewing, depending on the route and conditions. The famous swimming pigs at Big Major Cay are in the Exuma Cays, well away from George Town, and a visit can take much of the day. An organized excursion is preferable for distant cays; check the departure point, total duration and return time against your ship’s schedule before booking.

Self-Guided Walking Route: George Town

Easy: Approximately 1–2 km (0.6–1.2 mi), depending on the streets explored; about 15–30 minutes of walking, or 1–2 hours with stops. The center is generally flat, but sidewalks can be limited and the weather hot.

  1. Start at Government Dock, if this is your tender landing point, and look across Elizabeth Harbour toward Stocking Island.
  2. Walk into the town center and browse the local shops or straw market if open.
  3. Continue to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church and view the church from outside.
  4. Walk toward Lake Victoria and the nearby waterfront for a look at the small boats.
  5. Stop for a drink or local meal, then return through the center to your tender landing.

Confirm the tender landing location before starting; if your ship uses another landing, adjust the route and return journey accordingly.

Practical Tips

  • Leave a generous margin before the last tender, especially when returning by water taxi or from a distant beach. Boat trips can be affected by weather and sea conditions.
  • Confirm opening days, transport arrangements and pickup times in advance. Carry sun protection, water and suitable footwear.
  • Swim within your ability and check local conditions. Do not touch or disturb marine life.
