Mykonos Island is one of Cyclades Islands (Greece, Aegean Sea), located in the archipelago's center. The Cyclades form a circle surrounding the sacred Delos Island. Group's larges island is Naxos. Mykonos Island has total area approx 105 km2 (41 mi2) and population around 10,000, most of whom live in isle's main and biggest port town Mykonos (on the western coast).
Port's peak cruising season is in May and September. Mykonos Airport is located approx 4 km (2,5 mi) southeast of the town and serves domestic (year-round) and international flights (summer only). The island is also accessible via tour boats and ferries.
High-speed ships/ferry catamarans offer daily passenger shipping services from mainland Greece (Piraeus-Athens, Rafina, Thessaloniki, Kavala), and Crete (Heraklion, Rethymno). Fast ferries/Ro-Pax ships connect Mykonos with the surrounding islands Paros, Santorini (Thira), Syros, Tinos, Andros, Naxos, Folegandros, Sifnos, Ios, Amorgos (Katapola), Koufonisi, Milos, Serifos (Livadi), Skiathos, Chios, Ikaria (Evdilos, Agios Kirikos), Samos (Karlovassi), Kimolos, Sikinos, Lesbos (Mytilene), Limnos, Kythnos, Patmos.
Most inter-island ferry services are provided by Hellenic Seaways. Other Greek companies include Minoan Lines, Blue Star Ferries, Sea Jets, Golden Star Ferries, Cyclades Fast Ferries. After the island is named the cruise ship Blue Star Mykonos.
Mykonos Town (Chora) was named following the Greek practice to name the island's principal town after the isle itself. The local economy is heavily based on tourism. The island is famous worldwide for its vibrant nightlife and also for being a gay-friendly destination with several major establishments catering to LGBT communities
As cruise port, Mykonos is Cyclades' second most popular island destination - after Santorini. The town features as tourist attractions narrow curving streets, gorgeous blue-colored cube houses, white windmills. There are numerous operational windmills around the isle, but most are in Chora. Kato Mili (lower mills) stand in a row on a hill overlooking the sea.
Like Santorini, Mykonos is often included in Eastern Med itineraries operated by major cruise line brands like Costa, MSC, RCI-Royal Caribbean, NCL-Norwegian, HAL-Holland America, Celebrity, Princess, as well as the luxury travel brands Azamara, RSSC-Regent, Oceania, Seabourn, Windstar, SeaDream.
In 2019, the cruise port handled 550 ship calls with estimated ~700,000 passengers.
Following the COVID crisis, in 2022 Mykonos handled a total of 608 cruise ship calls, which number in 2023 surged to 895 (131 in June alone). However, 2023's over-tourism revealed the island's inadequate infrastructure to handle such a volume of visitors, among which is the lack of facilities (including public toilets) at the port to accommodate passengers from several simultaneously visiting cruise ships.
Mykonos Island cruise terminal
Ferries and cruise ships to Mykonos Island dock (anchor) at Mykonos Town - ferry port on the western coast. Mykonos cruise ship terminal is located at Tourlos. It is near Agios Stefanos beach. The distance to Mykonos Town (Hora) is 1.2 miles (3.5 km). There are shuttle buses to the town center. You can also catch a taxi from the taxi square on the Mykonos waterfront. The walking distance is about half an hour.
Mykonos cruise port's Tourlos Dock serves only smaller cruise ships. Larger vessels anchor in the bay and their passengers are tendered/ferried ashore by boats to the old harbor's tender dock, which is within walking distance from downtown.
The closest airport is approx 6 km (4 mi) from the seaport and approx 4 km (2 mi) from the tender dock.
Since 2025, cruise ship tourists visiting the islands of Mykonos and Santorini are charged a EUR 20/USD 21 fee, while other island destinations are charged a lower fee (EUR 5/US$5).
At a Glance
Independent with some planning or transport. Mykonos Town (Chora) is very easy to explore independently, but the starting point depends on whether your ship docks at the New Port in Tourlos or anchors and tenders passengers to the Old Port. Beaches and inland sights require a bus, taxi or tour, while Delos needs a boat excursion and enough schedule margin.
- Best for a short call: Mykonos Town, Little Venice and the windmills.
- With half a day: add a beach or take a Delos excursion.
- Longer calls: an island drive combining Ano Mera with coastal viewpoints or a beach becomes practical.
Getting from the Cruise Port
If your ship docks at Tourlos New Port
The New Port is north of Mykonos Town. The most convenient independent transfer is normally the Mykonos SeaBus, which links the cruise dock with the Old Port/Chora waterfront. The published seasonal service operates approximately every 30 minutes and the crossing takes about 10–12 minutes.
Public buses also connect the New Port with the Old Port and Fabrika during the summer season, and taxis are available. Cruise lines may provide their own shuttle, but this should not be assumed in advance.
Walking all the way from Tourlos into Chora is possible, but it is not the best use of a port call because sections of the road carry significant traffic and are less pleasant than the pedestrian center. The SeaBus is usually the more practical choice.
If your ship tenders
Tenders normally bring passengers to the Old Port, directly beside the northern edge of Mykonos Town. From here the principal sights are within walking distance, so no transfer is needed for a town visit.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Explore Mykonos Town on Foot
Allow: about 2–3 hours. Independent: very easy once in Chora.
This is the most practical choice for a short call. Walk through the whitewashed lanes of Chora to Panagia Paraportiani church, Little Venice, the waterfront windmills and Matogianni Street. Most of the center is pedestrianized, and distances between the main sights are short.
The lanes are paved with stone and can be uneven, with occasional steps and slopes. Comfortable footwear is useful, particularly when the town is crowded.
Visit Delos
Allow: about 4–5 hours. Independent: possible with careful timing; an organized excursion is preferable for tighter calls.
Excursion boats leave from the Old Port for the archaeological island of Delos. The boat crossing is approximately 30–40 minutes each way, followed by time to explore the archaeological site.
Delos is practical only when the excursion departure and return times fit comfortably inside the port call. Boat schedules can change because of wind and sea conditions, so this is not an excursion to attempt with a narrow return margin.
Spend a Few Hours at the Beach
Allow: about 3–4 hours including transport. Independent: easy with bus planning.
Platis Gialos is approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) from Mykonos Town and is one of the simplest south-coast beaches to reach independently. Frequent summer buses operate from Fabrika, on the southern edge of Chora. From the Old Port, allow roughly 10–15 minutes to walk through town to Fabrika before taking the bus.
If your ship is docked at Tourlos, Agios Stefanos is the closest convenient beach, about 1.3 km (0.8 mi) from the New Port. A short taxi or local bus ride is preferable to relying on the roadside walk.
A beach visit is less suitable for a very short call because it requires coordinating the return bus or taxi and, for passengers docked at Tourlos, the final transfer back to the ship.
See Ano Mera and More of the Island
Allow: about 3–4 hours. Independent: possible, but taxi or organized tour is more efficient.
Ano Mera lies roughly 8 km (5.0 mi) inland from Mykonos Town and provides a contrast to busy Chora. The village square and Panagia Tourliani monastery are the main stops. Public buses operate between the Old Port area and Ano Mera, but using buses to combine several island sights or beaches can consume too much of a limited port call.
A taxi or organized island tour is more practical if you want to combine Ano Mera with viewpoints, traditional countryside and an east- or south-coast beach.
Self-Guided Walking Tour of Mykonos Town
Old Port to Little Venice, Windmills and Matogianni
Distance: approximately 2 km (1.2 mi), excluding optional alley detours. Pure walking time: about 35–45 minutes. Recommended time: 2–3 hours. Difficulty: easy to moderate because of uneven paving, occasional steps and crowds.
- Old Port: Start at the tender landing or SeaBus arrival point and follow the waterfront into Chora.
- Manto Mavrogenous Square: Enter the pedestrian center and begin exploring the narrow whitewashed streets.
- Panagia Paraportiani: Continue toward the waterfront to one of Mykonos Town's best-known churches.
- Little Venice: Follow the seafront past the houses and balconies built directly along the water.
- Mykonos Windmills: Walk uphill a short distance to the windmills overlooking Little Venice.
- Fabrika: Continue toward the southern entrance to town. This is also the main bus departure point for several southern beaches.
- Matogianni Street: Return through the pedestrian lanes, shops and small squares of central Chora.
- Old Port: Finish back at the waterfront for your tender or SeaBus transfer to Tourlos.
If your ship is docked at Tourlos, take the SeaBus into town before beginning the route and allow additional time for the return crossing.
Practical Tips
- Check your ship's instructions before going ashore because the same port call may use either a berth at Tourlos or tender operations.
- If docked at Tourlos, note the SeaBus or shuttle return point when you arrive in town rather than searching for it at the end of the day.
- Mykonos Town is compact, but stone paving, steps and crowded lanes can slow walking.
- For beach trips, check the current bus return timetable before leaving Chora.
- Delos boat operations are weather-sensitive; allow a substantial margin between the scheduled return to Mykonos and your ship's all-aboard time.
- If you must transfer from Chora back to Tourlos, aim to be back in the port area well before the ship's stated all-aboard time. Tender passengers should also allow extra time for possible queues and follow the ship's last-tender instructions.
- For a short call focused mainly on Chora, renting a car or ATV usually adds unnecessary traffic, parking and return-time complications.
