Samana (Santa Barbara de Samana) is a port city in northeastern Dominicana. It is located on Samana Bay's northern coast. Samana is a major Caribbean tourism travel destination and very popular for whale-watching. The city's population is around 110,000.
Most of the province's territory is occupied by Sierra de Samana - mountain range with steep slopes. The highest elevation (Monte Mesa) is 605 m (1980 ft).
The town Santa Barbara was first mentioned in the late-15th-century (1493) when Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) made the last stop of his first voyage to the New World here. He landed on what is today Rincon Beach (Playa Rincon).
Municipality's main economic activities are agriculture, commercial fishing and tourism. The boost to the local economy happens in January-March with the migration of thousands of North Atlantic humpback whales. Each year, the marine mammals come to Samana Bay to give birth.
In July 2022 started the construction of a dedicated cruise port. Currently, Port Samana (locode DOPUD) is a tender cruise port where the ships anchor at sea and their passengers are ferried via the ship's tender boats.
Marina Puerto Bahia
Marina Puerto Bahia is in Samana Bay's northern end and has berthing capacity 107 (slips) for vessels (pleasure boats and superyachts) with max LOA length 46 m (150 ft). For the vessels moored at Marina Puerto Bahia are provided water, electricity, 24-hour security, bunkering (at a dedicated Fueling Pier).
Samana Marina's facilities and amenities include Mini-Market, Spa & Beauty Salon, Excursion Agency, restroom, showers, laundry services, free WiFi, free parking, water shuttle (transportation), taxi, car rental.
Samana Bay (measuring approx 65 km / 40 mi east-west and 24 km / 15 mi north-south) is a natural harbor (well-protected deepwater anchorage site) ranked one of the finest in the West Indies.
