Bremen (port locode DEBRE) is a Weser River cruise port, Hanseatic City (Freie Hansestadt) and the capital of Germany's Bremen state. By urban population (around 570,000) the city is ranked Northern Germany's 2nd largest (after Hamburg) and Germany's 11th largest. A large industrial and commercial city with a large river port, Bremen is also part of the Bremen-Oldenburg metro region with a combined population of over 2,5 million. Weser River (formed by Fulda and Werra rivers) flows through Lower Saxony to Bremen, then flows for approx 50 km (30 mi) to Bremerhaven where after some 10 km empties into North Sea (Baltic Sea).
Bremen is located approx 50 km (31 mi) east of Oldenburg, approx 110 km (70 mi) southwest of Hamburg (Germany's largest seaport), approx 120 km (75 mi) northwest of Hannover (Lower Saxony state's capital), approx 100 km (60 mi) north of Minden and approx 105 km (65 mi) northeast of Osnabruck. River cruise ships dock in Hemelingen (Bremen City District East).
The settlement was founded in the 7th century, became a fortified (stone-walled) town by the mid-11th century, and developed as major shipping trade city in the following centuries mainly trading with Norway, England and Holland. By the mid-14th century, its population had increased to over 20,000. City's economy in the 19th century was marked by the companies Johann Lange Shipyard (building Germany's first steamships), Bremerhaven (Port of Bremen / established 1827), Norddeutscher Lloyd (1857-founded commercial shipping company), Beck's Brewery (1837-founded), Bremen Cotton Exchange (1872-founded). The 1971-founded University of Bremen is one of Germany's 11 elite universities with around 24,000 students. At the end of WW2 (1939-1945), US-British bombers destroyed over 60% of the city's built-up area.
As a cruise port, Bremen is included in the regular schedules of some of Europe's largest river cruise companies - CroisiEurope and Nicko Cruises. In 2019, the port was visited by the ships Mona Lisa and Victor Hugo (CroisiEurope) and Frederic Chopin (Nicko).

Bremen is especially convenient when a vessel berths beside the Schlachte riverfront: the historic center begins only a few minutes away and its principal sights fit comfortably into a half-day visit. Calls shown as “Bremen” are generally made by smaller river or coastal vessels; large ocean ships normally use Bremerhaven, a separate port about 60 km (37.3 mi) north of Bremen.
Independent sightseeing: Easy when berthed at the central river landing. Most highlights are close together and public transport is useful only for the outer districts. Because berths can vary, passengers should confirm the ship’s stated docking point before planning to walk ashore.
Getting from the Ship
Small passenger vessels may berth at or near the Schlachte embankment, including the landing area close to St. Martin’s Church. From this central waterfront, Bremen Market Square is approximately 500 m (0.3 mi) away and can be reached in about 7–10 minutes on foot.
The route into the old town is mostly flat, although the Schlachte has ramps and steps between its lower quay and upper promenade. Taxis, trams and buses are available around the city center, particularly near Domsheide. Bremen is not normally a tender destination for vessels able to reach the city’s river berths.
If the itinerary uses an industrial or outlying berth, walking may be restricted or impractical and a shuttle or arranged transfer may be required. Follow the ship’s instructions rather than relying solely on the mapped port location.
Best Ways to Spend the Call
Explore Bremen’s Historic Center
Allow 2–3 hours for the compact group of sights around Market Square. Highlights include the UNESCO-listed Town Hall and Roland statue, St. Peter’s Cathedral, the Bremen Town Musicians statue and the ornate brick architecture of Böttcherstraße. Continue into the Schnoor, where narrow cobbled lanes wind between small historic houses, cafés and shops.
This is the most practical independent choice for a short call. Nearly everything is within about 1 km (0.6 mi) of the central Schlachte landing, though cobbles in Böttcherstraße and the Schnoor can be uncomfortable for wheelchairs or passengers with limited mobility.
Combine the Old Town with the Schlachte Waterfront
Allow 2.5–4 hours for the central sights followed by a relaxed walk along the Weser. The upper Schlachte promenade has restaurants and views of the river, while several vessels and landing stages occupy the lower quay. Seasonal Weser and harbor cruises depart from the riverfront; published trips commonly last about 75–105 minutes, so check the day’s timetable and leave sufficient time afterward to return aboard.
Visit the Kunsthalle and the Old City Ramparts
Art visitors can walk from Market Square to the Kunsthalle Bremen in approximately 10–15 minutes. A museum visit of 1.5–2 hours combines well with a walk through the nearby Wallanlagen, the landscaped former defensive belt surrounding the old town. This option remains easy independently and requires no special transport from a central berth.
See Modern Maritime Bremen in Überseestadt
Überseestadt occupies former harbor and warehouse districts northwest of the old town. Its converted warehouses, modern architecture, marina areas and waterfront spaces offer a different experience from medieval Bremen. It is too spread out to include efficiently on a short walking visit, so use a tram, taxi or an organized city tour and allow roughly 2–3 hours.
Take an Excursion to Worpswede
The artists’ village of Worpswede, northeast of Bremen, is known for its galleries, museums and rural landscape. It is better suited to a longer call because reaching the village requires a road transfer and local sights are dispersed. An organized excursion or prearranged taxi is more practical than coordinating regional public transport within limited shore time.
Self-Guided Old Town Walk
Distance: approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Pure walking time: about 35–45 minutes. Recommended time with stops: 2–3 hours. Difficulty: easy to moderate, mostly level with some cobbles and possible steps at the riverfront.
- Schlachte promenade: Start at the central landing and follow the Weser waterfront toward St. Martin’s Church.
- Böttcherstraße: Enter the short pedestrian lane to see its distinctive early-20th-century brick architecture and courtyards.
- Market Square: View the Town Hall, Roland statue, merchants’ façades and the regional parliament building.
- Bremen Town Musicians: Find the compact bronze statue beside the Town Hall.
- St. Peter’s Cathedral: Visit the cathedral exterior or allow additional time if entering.
- Schnoor Quarter: Walk through its narrow lanes, passing small houses, craft shops and cafés.
- Weser promenade: Return from the Schnoor to the river and follow the waterfront back to the ship.
The loop keeps passengers close to the berth throughout. Those with reduced mobility can omit the lower quay, remain on the upper promenade and approach the Schnoor carefully because of its uneven paving.
Practical Tips
- Do not confuse Bremen with Bremerhaven. Transfer between the two cities takes about an hour by road in normal conditions and longer when terminal transfers and traffic are included.
- Confirm the exact berth and whether independent pedestrian exit is permitted; arrangements differ between central river landings and commercial harbor berths.
- The old town is compact enough that public transport usually saves little time during a short central visit.
- Check museum, cathedral and boat-tour schedules for the actual call date rather than building the day around an unconfirmed opening or departure.
- Allow at least 30–45 minutes to return from central Bremen, and a substantially larger margin after any trip outside the city. Follow the ship’s all-aboard time, which is earlier than its published departure.
