Ronne/Roenne is a Baltic Sea cruise port, the principal port and largest town on Bornholm Island (Denmark). The town has population around 14,000 and land area approx 29 km2 (11 mi2). Bornholm has total land area 588 km2 (227 mi2), total population around 40,000 and highest elevation point (Mt Rytterknaegten) 162 m (531 ft).
Bornholm's biggest towns (with population over 1000/1K) are Ronne (14K), Nexo (4K), Aakirkeby (2K), Hasle (1,5K), Allinge-Sandvig (1,5K) and Svaneke (1K).
Due to its natural deepwater harbor and strategic position in the Baltic Sea, Port Ronne (locode DKRNN) has a rich history highlighted by Swedish and German rules. The settlement was developed as an important fishing port (sourcing herring). The town is best known for its cobbled streets, half-(low-)timbered buildings, museums. Most tourists are from Baltic countries (Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Poland).
Two streets (Laksegade and Storegade) contain most of the town's historic houses - former trade buildings and homes of noblemen and merchants. Best-known landmarks include Bornholm Museum (1893-founded), Defence Museum (themed on the island's military history), St Nicolas Church (1744-built), Smedegards (riding school), Ronne Lighthouse (1880-built).
Regularly scheduled ferries connect Ronne to mainland Denmark and Poland. A catamaran (high-speed passenger ferry) connection links to Ystad (Sweden), from where there is a direct train line to Copenhagen (Denmark). TT-LINE ferries offer direct crossings to Swinoujscie (Poland).
Bornholm Airport is located approx 5 km (3 mi) southeast of downtown. The airport serves regularly scheduled domestic flights (by DAT / Danish Air Transport) connecting to mainland Denmark (Aalborg, Billund, Copenhagen). Seasonal flights (by Alsie Express) connect to Sonderborg (Southern Denmark).
2022 was Port Roenne's record year for cruise shipping, with 65 calls handled. A further 14 calls were made to other Bornholm ports, mostly by smaller-sized expedition ships. So far, the Port's largest passenger ship is MSC Preciosa (333 m in length).
In 2023, the Port had booked 48 cruise ship calls (60+ in total to Bornholm).
Bornholm Island Denmark cruise terminal
Cruise ships to Bornholm Island dock (anchor) either at Ronne (southwestern part) or Gudhjem (northeast coast). Some vessels may dock at Nexo (on the southeast coast).
In 2019, Port Roenne completed an infrastructure development project (dock extensions) and now can handle larger cruise ships. Before 2019, the Port had the capacity to accommodate passenger vessels with max LOA length 240 m (787 ft), mainly from the fleets of AIDA and HAL-Holland America Line. The expanded docking facilities now attract larger ships and new brands like Celebrity, RCI-Royal Caribbean, TUI, Cunard, Princess, P&O UK, MSC, NCL-Norwegian.
In 2025, Port Roenne expanded its infrastructure with a new cruise pier (length 374 m/1227 ft, berthing depth 11 m /36 ft) located at a 15-minute walking distance from Destination Bornholm’s visitor center and ~20 minutes from downtown. The development now allows the accommodation of larger vessels and enhanced operational efficiency within the harbor.
The new cruise pier supplanted the previously utilized berths, which were reallocated to support other commercial activities. The existing cruise pier also received alterations (removal of inner breakwaters and extension of the southern outer breakwater), which improved navigational conditions by creating a calmer harbor basin.
Bornholm cruise calls normally use the port of Rønne, the island’s main town and transport hub. Rønne is easy to explore independently, while Bornholm’s castles, fishing villages and beaches require a bus, taxi, rental vehicle or organized excursion.
At a Glance
- Independent sightseeing: Easy in Rønne; possible around the island with advance transport planning.
- Best for a short call: Rønne’s old quarter, harbor and craft workshops.
- Best full-day choice: Hammershus and the north coast, or a broader island tour.
- Walking conditions: Mostly gentle, with cobbles and occasional slopes in the old town.
Getting from the Cruise Port
Most cruise ships berth at Rønne’s cruise pier, although operational arrangements can vary by ship. The central streets are approximately 1.5–2 km (0.9–1.2 mi) from the outer cruise berths, depending on the passenger exit used.
A complimentary cruise shuttle normally links the cruise pier with stops near the Bornholm Welcome Center and Sct. Nicolai Church. Service is coordinated with cruise calls, but passengers should confirm the day’s stops and final return time onboard. Walking into town generally takes about 20–30 minutes along paved port and waterfront routes.
Local BAT buses depart from the Snellemark area in central Rønne for towns and attractions elsewhere on Bornholm. They can work for one carefully chosen destination, but timetables vary by season and connections may leave little margin before departure. Taxis should be reserved where possible when several ships or ferries are in port.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Explore Rønne Independently
Allow 2–3 hours for Sct. Nicolai Church, the cobbled old quarter, Store Torv, the harbor and one museum or craft attraction. Hjorths Fabrik focuses on Bornholm’s ceramics tradition, while Erichsens Gård preserves a historic town house and garden. Opening days can be limited outside the main summer season.
This is the simplest option for a short call, poor weather or passengers who prefer to remain close to the ship.
Hammershus and North Bornholm
Hammershus castle ruins stand on Bornholm’s rocky northwest coast, about 25 km (15.5 mi) from Rønne and roughly 30–35 minutes away by road. Allow at least 1.5–2 hours to walk between the visitor center, viewpoints and ruins. Paths include slopes, uneven surfaces and exposed sections.
A taxi, rental vehicle or organized excursion is the most practical choice. Public buses may be suitable on longer calls, but passengers should check both outward and return services before leaving Rønne. A north-coast tour may also include Allinge, Sandvig or the dramatic scenery around Hammerknuden.
Svaneke and Gudhjem
These small east-coast towns offer harbors, traditional houses, craft shops and smokehouses. Gudhjem is built on a steep hillside, while Svaneke is easier for a compact harbor walk. Either can be combined with another island attraction by car or excursion, but trying to visit both independently by bus can consume much of a cruise call.
Dueodde Beach
Dueodde lies about 30 km (18.6 mi) from Rønne and is known for its long sandy shoreline. It is best treated as a half-day outing because reaching the beach involves road travel followed by walking from the access or parking area. A taxi, rental vehicle or organized transfer is more dependable than relying on several bus connections during a limited port stay.
Self-Guided Rønne Walking Tour
Distance: Approximately 3 km (1.9 mi). Pure walking time: About 45 minutes. Recommended total time: 2–3 hours. Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with cobbles and gentle slopes.
- Sct. Nicolai Church: Begin near the cruise-shuttle stop and visit Rønne’s prominent harbor-side church.
- Old quarter: Walk through the narrow streets around Storegade, Vimmelskaftet and Laksegade, where low historic houses form the most attractive part of town.
- Store Torv: Continue to Rønne’s central square for shops, cafés and local street life.
- Erichsens Gård: Detour to the preserved historic house and garden if it is open.
- Hjorths Fabrik: Visit the ceramics museum and working pottery, subject to seasonal opening.
- Nørrekås and the waterfront: Finish with a walk past the marina and harbor before returning to the shuttle stop.
The route can be shortened by omitting the museums. Leave additional time for the shuttle journey and any security procedures at the cruise pier.
When an Organized Excursion Is Preferable
An organized excursion is recommended for passengers wanting to see several parts of Bornholm in one day. The island’s highlights are widely separated, and a guided circuit avoids coordinating seasonal bus routes. Typical routes may combine Hammershus, a round church, coastal scenery and an east-coast town, but the exact itinerary depends on the cruise call.
Practical Tips
- Check the cruise shuttle’s final departure time before entering town.
- Confirm museum opening hours, especially on Sundays and outside summer.
- For independent island travel, download or photograph the current BAT timetable before leaving Rønne.
- Allow a generous return margin when using public buses or visiting the opposite side of the island.
- Bring a windproof layer; exposed coastal sites such as Hammershus can feel considerably cooler than central Rønne.
